Here's something fun to ponder

Talking about ID names and whatnot.
Most people with numbers after their names for email or id handles do so because somebody already has nabbed the original one. However, one would assume that handles would be specific to an individual group rather than the entire phpbb community.
That being the case, pretty much anything was up for grabs here. But the majority of people (myself included) automatically added their digits. Granted, if Bob46187 had just used "Bob" one might have to question which Bob that was, but it seems pretty safe that people would know who mrkelley, ulysses, fantine, littlebeast, nellylunatic et al were.
But still we add the numbers! Why?

In Bob's case, I believe that was his student ID number in college.
My '0' is a substitute for the letter 'o'; it's a hacker thing...
The handle spelled with an 'o' happened to have been unavailable when I first went to register it for an Yahoo message board. Since then, well, it's my trademark now!

I actually understand your reasoning, specific spellings and things like that. But, let's say MarleysGh0st was taken when you registered with Go and you had to use MarleysGh0st58.
When you registered here, would you have registered as MarleysGh0st58 or used MarleysGh0st, since it was available?

Probably the latter.
Then there's my AOL account, which is my (real) first initial and last name. I can't tell you how many people have some version of that with extra numbers after the name, who can't remember to include those numbers when giving their address to people or signing up on websites. So I end up getting e-mail meant for them.

For me, the 13's become as much a part of my internet identity as the littlebeast. When I signed up for my Yahoo account back when the Lifeboat was created (7 and a half years ago!

), littlebeast13 wasn't even available, so instead of picking another number, I just threw in an underscore.
Incidentally, my Go ID was registered to play ESPN's old Draw Three contest they had back in 2000. I tried to sign up as Beast (My nickname for the mongrel of a dachsund my Dad once stupidly bought my Mom), but that didn't work, so I tried littlebeast.... no luck. I finally threw in the 13 and was happy to finally be registered...... until I found out my WTVT® couldn't handle the contest's script....
I found the Bored 2 weeks later, and low and behold, when I went to post my first message, there was that "littlebeast13" ID I had registered in the log in box ready to go. Rather than make a new ID (Which I would have, and lord only knows what I'd have picked), I just went ahead and used it. I figured it was probably only a one time deal anyway.......

Well, I for one (or 4 ones) use the 1111 as a good luck symbol.
11:11 on a digital clock.
And for those who try to say it another way, I mentally say christieeleveneleven.
Here's another one for lb.....
11:11 at ya NotebookBoy!
By now he has completely forgotten some long lost girlfriend who had a thing for the same number and completely associates the concept with me alone.

I use different ids. This is the only place that I am PlacentiaSoccerMom. In most of the rest of the world I use some variation of my first name and my maiden and married name initials.

I think you are confusing me with BiT. I remember that story!
But I do still think of you everytime the clock says 11:11!

I made a post a a few days ago that, when I signed onto ebay that morning, my feedback was 1111 and I immediately thought of you.

I think that's the main reason for most people (number two probably being habit).
I use 33 in just about everything in some fashion: PINs, passwords, lotto numbers, keno, etc.
Oddly enough, my first (and most used) email id I have occasionally had to add numbers to and I always use 57 instead of 33.
I also had to add an underscore between fantine and 33 in yahoo, but I did that just so it would be clear that I was the same person on go and egroups.

When I first tried to register my web domain, silverscreenvideos, which was the name under which I was doing business, was taken, so I picked up silverscreenselect (and a few others), which I then used as a handle on some of the boards I was on (since my email address was @silverscreenselect.com).
A few months later, silverscreenvideos became available as a domain so I took it (and still kept the silverscreenselect). By then most people here knew me so I kept the handle (and SSS is such an easy abbreviation). Most of the other boards where I post, I use a variation of silverscreenvideos.

It's interesting. I seldom use numbers in my screen names. I have numbers in my main email address but pretty much everything else is just letters.

TheSpeckledBand
Those are the ones I mostly use. I kind of work my way down the list rather than use numbers.
I do put numbers and symbols in my passwords when I can.

The numbers 23 and 17, johndillingerdiedforyou (an alias I used when Go was being particularly snotty to me about my chosen handle), and "kick out the JAMs" all refer to my reverence for the Illuminatus! trilogy. By now, the 23 is just a habit, since there're so many mrkelleys around.
It's about time to reread the trilogy again.
