Our local grocery stores are having stimulus specials of their own.

If you buy a $300 gift card, they will increase the card's value to $330.
If you buy a $600 gift card, they will increase the card's value to $660.
If you buy a $1200 gift card, they will increase the card's value to $1320.

You can buy one card a week. It's a good way to save on groceries.

You don't have to use a stimulus check to do it either, just ask for it.

For east coast people, I believe Shaw's is doing that, although I am not clear on whether you actually need to bring your check in, or if you can just buy the gift cards and get the bonus.

The cool thing is that you can keep buying them every week. So say you spent $120 a week on groceries, buy a card for $100, then you get that extra $20 each week for free.

I'm going to have to look into it, to see if I need the check or not in order to purchase the gift card. It's not at the store I usually shop at but even if I can buy 80% of my stuff there, I'd save.

Yeah, no such luck, here is their promo, you can only do it once and you need the check. Maybe I should move to CA!!!

Customers can exchange their tax refund or economic stimulus checks by presenting their check and a government issued I.D. at their local store’s Customer Service center. Customers may purchase a store gift card in $300 increments not to exceed $1,200. Each gift card will be loaded with an additional 10% dollar amount. The additional amount cannot be used for the purchase of alcohol, fuel or tobacco. Customers are allowed to purchase gift cards less than the total amount of their refund with the difference to be given back in the form of cash. The program is limited to one offer per household. Offer is available May 1, 2008 through July 31, 2008.

Kroger here in Atlanta has been offering a 10% bonus for those buying gift cards with the stimulus checks. That's probably a very good deal for the grocery stores, because most people overspend when they are paying for something with gift cards/certificates because they don't have to fork out any cash for whatever they are buying.

Of course, in this case, it was their money that bought the card in the first place, but they don't make the association.

For us, $300 is about a month's worth of groceries anyway.
