Shooting for another "Ship On A Stick" ...

#1 Post by secondchance » Sun Jun 29, 2008 2:02 am

We're taking a 4-day Carnival cruise Monday to celebrate the lovely daughter's high school graduation. When I'm not in the casino losing my Jackson casino winnings, i'll be in a lounge playing the trivia contests as if those madly coveted "Genuine 24K gold Plastic" trophies brought diddly on Ebay...

I wish I could find somewhere around L.A. that has those Pub trivia nights - sounds like fun!

Mmmm, can't wait to stuff myself till I pop like a guppy.

I think you should ask Uly where he plays. I know one of the places is O'Brian's, downtown, but since I don't live in LA, I may be misremembering which place is where. He plays a couple of times a week.

Well, here I am. Here is the website that gives locations in LA:

I play at Casey's (generally by myself) in downtown LA on Wednesdays. And I play at O'Briens on Monday nights with a team.
There is live trivia in Santa Monica at a different O'Briens.

This one is on Wednesdays only. This is where Jerome Vered, Brad Rutter and various other J! champions play. In fact I think Jerome and Brad are in one of the photos of the winning teams.
Feel free to send me a pm. I don't know of any live trivia in Orange County. I generally play NTN in Newport Beach on Tuesdays.

I've never played in any of the trivia contests on any of the cruises I've been on. Too busy doing other things, although I have to say I do want to win a ship-on-a-stick on one of these cruises.

Only 55 more days to go.

I've only been on one cruise (Holland America's Northwest Passage) and I played their trivia. I won every day but I think there were very few people playing. You had to go to the library to play and it was run by one of the performers in the nightly shows. I think the fact that she was easy on the eyes had something to do with my return each morning. The prizes were actually quite nice....fridge magnet, coffee mugs, letter opener, umbrella and coasters. Of course they all had the HA logo. And I ended up winning a complete set of these items later in the cruise.

The only other person on the bored who does live pub trivia regularly is killertomato. He plays in Pittsburgh. There are others who play NTN.

Hey what am I, a potted plant?

I've been studying for my weekly pub quiz tonight. They send out a newsletter to the regulars, telling them what subject the theme round will be each week. It's mainly a way to get people to sign up for the newsletter.

This week's theme round is more specific than usual -- famous Texans with disabilities. I suspect they'll be taking most of the questions from this list:

I don't know why they list Santa Anna as a Texan.

Dan, if I'm ever out there on a Wednesday, let's play with (or against?) the big boys in Santa Monica.

Ship-On-A-Stick -- NOT

#12 Post by secondchance » Mon Jul 07, 2008 2:13 am

Oh well, no golden plastic prize this time around - fierce competition from a group of 9 drunken family-reunionites. Blackjack was fun, tho. Sat down at a $25 minimum table by accident and try to pass it off like i meant to when everyone stared at me... so i pull out $50, planning to make a hasty retreat, but to my amazement got some really great hands and within about 20 minutes somehow have over $800 in chips piled in front of me. Never won that much in one sitting! And then lost it all in ten minutes from some potentially excellent splits and doubles which backfired... so sad. But a good lesson - get up and go to a buffet when you've gathered enough that if you immediately lost it all you'd obsess for days and write about it on a trivia thread...

It seems some happy cards and calls have been coming in. Congrats to all!!!

Bush pics are just inherently funny. I like the ones with the monkeys.

I hit the jackpot on the HA transatlantic cruise elwing and I took last year - I was on the team that won the progressive trivia competition, with a boatload (pun intended) of prizes including a rolling carrybag, an unbrella, a picture frame, a clock/calculator, and a host of other stuff. I also won the daily trivia competitions and picked up the vaunted luggage tags, a hat, and such. I managed to find a good team for music trivia, too, and won a lot of free non-alcoholic drinks (which went for about $8.50 at the bar).

Sorry Ed. I just saw this. But of course we'll take on all comers.
