High school students in the State of California need 40 hours of community service. I have been told that competitive universities would like to see at least 100 and preferably 200 hours of community service.

Today Maddie and I drove to the Orange County Food Bank and packed boxes for the poor. Each box had two boxes of Rice Crispies, one can each of Orange Juice, Apple Juice and Grape Juice, three cans of evaporated milk, two cans of peas, two cans of apricots, one can of beef stew, one jar of peanut butter, one package of rice and one bag of powdered milk. Maddie and I were in charge of packing the rice and powdered milk, checking to make sure that everything was in the box, and folding the corners of the boxes down so that the tapers could tape the boxes.

The work wasn't that difficult, and the time passed quickly, though I am tired and have paper cuts from folding the boxes.

I was driving Maddie to her grandparents' house afterwards and she feels lucky about home situation. She said that she couldn't or wouldn't eat 2/3 of what was in the box. She's allergic to peanut butter, hates peas and beef stew and doesn't drink milk. She realizes that she is lucky that she has so many choices in the foods that she eats. Most of the food that we were packing came from the Federal Government.

Most of the people that we were working with were there for Court Related Community Service rather than trying to work on High School requirements. Most of the kids who were there had to do community service because they were caught tagging or doing mischief.

Some of the people who were there wondered what we had done because they never see parents working with their kids. I told them that my daughter was a good kid and that she was working on high school graduation requirements during the summer. Maddie told me that she would have preferrred them thinking that she was a tagger. :)

Peer pressure will get you every time! j/k!!!

My son went to Equador and Peru on mission trips when he was in high school. He came home very grateful for the cushy life he has here. :)
