WWTBAM Bored

Ok, this morning my Mom went to the hospital to have a procedure to check her heart murmur (sp). My Mom is in the treatment room (they have to put you out to do this test) they have hooked her up to the oxygen, and then the physician doing the test looks at her chart and says, "Why are we doing this test on you? Who told you that you needed this test?" My Mom said that the technician told her, and that her GP's office ordered the test. The doctor asked her if she was having any problems, my Mom said no...Doc says, "one in 5 people have heart murmurs, and unless you are having issues you do not need to have this test!" My Mom calls me when she gets home with my Dad, and tells me what has happened. My Mom is a worrier...she didn't sleep at all last night, worried about the test. Now...we find out that she didn't even NEED the test! Physician called my Mom's GP's office and had a talk with them. This is the same GP who said that my Mom had lyme disease, and she doesn't, and told her she may have lupus and she doesn't...

My mom didn't even have enough of the markers for lupus that would qualify her to have the test.

Ok, 3 strikes, and you are out buddy!

I am sorry your mom had to go through that.

I am glad she has you to help her through it.

Sounds like a GP who is ordering tests to a) get more reimbursement from insurance or b) cover his ass. Good luck in searching for and finding a new GP for your mom.

I like and recommend my physician assistant who was pretty fresh out of school when I started seeing her. Obviously this particular one will not work for your mom, but a similar sort of person might.

They are up on all the latest technology, and they are not interested in doing a lot of tests just to pad the bill (at least this one isn't). Because she is a P.A., she seems to be available much of the time, because most everyone else wants to see "the real doctor." She can do everything he can do; just did a year less of residency or some such. She is not allowed to have her own practice but that's the only restriction. I wonder why more med students don't do this route? I guess they want their own office someday.

Yesterday, when I spoke with my Mom, it was a very short conversation, she was on her way to her hair appointment, so we didn't talk long.

Therefore, I called my Mom last night to check-in and see how she was feeling...Since she didn't get much sleep the night before, I asked her, "Did you take a nap?" She said, "No, but, I am going to bed within the next few minutes (7:30 pm est, although retired, she stills works part-time baking, and so she needed to be at work at 4:00 am today)

She sounded so much better...I was also trying my best to joke with her and Dad, and get her mind off of the morning unpleasantry. My Dad goes to see the GP on Monday for his physical, he told me that he is going to give him a piece of his mind...my Dad's bark is worst than his bite, so I highly doubt it!

For ritterskoop...my Mom is seeing her GP's PA. She likes her...but, I don't know if their is bad communication in the GP's office or what they are doing to be constantly making errors with each of my Mom's diagnosis.
