Anyone else REALLY afraid of dentists?
Well, I went again today. For the second time in a couple of weeks.
The hygenist didn't seem to mind what a baby I am.
I hope she didn't laugh a whole bunch after I left.

No, not at all afraid..... I find that having all work done under IV sedation, removes that hyperventilation, sweating, pant-wetting fear.

If you are unfortunate enough to have had to have periodontal scraping & scaling, ever thereafter (at least so far for me) the hygenists are under strict orders to be gentle with you. Plus, you get to see them twice a year under your insurance (if you're me anyway).
My regular dentist once had a temp hygenist who operated like the Samsonite gorilla. I never have to endure people like that again (as long as the "don't make her gums bleed" warning is on the chart, anyway).

I used to be phobic. My then-boss made an appointment for me with a friend of his, and warned the dentist about me.
The dentist figured out that I reacted badly to pain-killers in the novocaine family. I became depressed -- I mean severely, dangerously depressed -- after a single shot. He drove to the Health Sciences Center to find alternates that were still experimental at the time. They did not have the same dreadful after-effects on me. I became a good patient, and the dentist earned my highest appreciation.
Alas, he decided to run for the state legislature and got elected. I vote for him every time. It's the least I can do. My new dentist knows what drugs to use.

My Annie is.
The dentist my family goes to used to emply Mrs. Rexer as a nanny. Dr. Becky has known both of my girls since we brought them home. Annie used to go to Dr. Becky's house every day. When Annie went in to the room for examination, x-rays and cleaning, she bolted out of the chair and out of the building, screaming at the top of her lungs!
The rest of us still go to Dr. Becky for all dental issues.
Annie goes to a sedation dentist now.

Being afraid of the dentist does not make you a wimp.
It makes you someone who is afraid of the dentist.
I am afraid of needles.
I am not a wimp.
I am afraid of needles.
Everyone is afraid of something, even if they say they are not.

Yikers!
We love our pediatric dentist. The kids are in a room where they can see each other. There are television sets on the ceiling, and the kids wear headphones while watching a show or a movie. No issues so far.
(I also like our orthodontist, and I am sure that he likes me for the amount of money that I laid out for a couple of braces for my son.

)
You did remind me that we need to set up an appointment for our toddler to have her first dental visit.

O Saucy One!
You know how to make me laugh!
Thanks Sweetie!

I love the dentist. I had extra teeth installed so I could see him more often.

Our dentist in my teenage years didn't let the novocaine take full effect before starting. It created some discomfort during the procedure, though not real pain. OTOH the numbing aftereffect lasted longer without further problems. And I still have some of his fillings work, over 35 years later. Wish my current dentist's work was as good.

I LOVE going to the dentist! I always used to tell my hygienist that, if I could afford it, I'd get my teeth cleaned every week.
It probably helps that I didn't have any traumatic childhood experiences because my first visit to the dentist's office was at the tender age of 20.
My second visit was to an oral surgeon who dug a wisdom tooth out of my neck. I chose to go with local anaesthesia. Because it was way cheaper than being put out and how bad could it possibly be? I think I had the answer to that question about the time he broke out the chisel and the mallet. Ha!
I still love to go to the dentist!

I doubt I will ever forget getting my wisdom teeth out. The oral surgeon used what amounted to a miniature crowbar in order to get one of them extracted.

Once when I was looking for a new dentist, I went to a group practice. On my first visit, the dentist looked in my mouth, saw that I still had my wisdom teeth, and said "Yep, gotta slick them wizzies right out!"
It was also my last visit.
I still have my "wizzies".
No one else has suggested any "slicking".

When Dr. Nassimbene took the one out, he suggested I get the lower one on the other side out as well, since it was going to do the same thing (didn't have any top ones, still don't). But he didn't want to do it the same day since I was only having a local and I didn't have the money to get the second one done anyway, so I never made a follow up.
Hmmm de hmmmm years later, it's still exactly where it was back then. Hasn't moved up, down or sideways.

I have never had problems with them. Not then, not since. (knock wood) I believe the dentist was drumming up business for his partner in the practice, the oral surgeon.

I am terrified of the dentist. Irrationally, horribly, run the other direction terrified.
We had a dentist when I was a child that was a cocky SOB. He whistled and hummed while scraping the shit out of my gums, the insides of my cheeks. Hurt like hell for days. He also "found" cavities we did not have, drilled the entire center out of our teeth and filled it with silver. Left just a hollow shell of the tooth so when the filling needs replacing the tooth can't withstand it and breaks off. Fun. Hope Dr. Dawson is finding his "retirement" exceptionally hot and sulphurous. I am certain there was a special place reserved for him there.

Why, I can't believe everyone is afraid of me! In my entire professional career, I've never hurt a fly..... because I've never had a fly as a patient! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Let me change the bit on my Craftsman drill. This looks like it's gonna be one messy root canal.....

I have a mentally painful thing coming up, even though the last was not physically painful.
A few years ago, a tooth broke. It was the 2nd tooth I had that spontaneously (it seemed to be) broke, so I called my dentist expecting said dentist to work the wonders that had been worked for 1st broken tooth. In fact, I signed up with said dentist in order to get the wonders worked on 1st broken tooth. Dentist takes one look at this one, says "its your wisdom tooth; its coming out", & gives me oral surgeon reference. I say "but you worked wonders on 1st broken tooth" & dentist says "we don't do reconstructions on wisdom teeth". They do do them on all other teeth. And they certainly do fillings in them. Just not reconstructions.
So now I have another wisdom tooth with a hole in it that the X-rays & dental probes can see but I can't. Apparently this is not an easily fillable new hole; tooth already has big filling. So I was given the orders for the oral surgeon, again. I knew already not to plead for my tooth, but I tried anyway, & got the same answer; "I'll need the room to get to the tooth next to it soon enough; you don't use this one for anything anyway". "Yes I do, I chew with it".
Well, from soon on, the wisdom teeth on top, which are still in there, will both have nothing on bottom to chew against.
Its age gsabc. Age. At your probable age, mine were fine too.
