Maddie, Jeff and I saw Get Smart today.

I wasn't expecting a lot and was pleasantly surprised. It was a cute movie.

I like Steve Carell. I wasn't sure about him at first, but I really enjoyed him in Dan in Real Life. Good movie.

I just saw it, and it is good. There are lots of nods to the original series, but you don't have to remember the series to enjoy it.

No, Emma has been with Jeff's parents since Wednesday. She's been doing 12 mile bike rides and going to the beach every day.

That's great to hear. I was a big fan of the TV show and was worried that the movie would simply bomb. Of all actors around today, I think Steve Carell is the clear choice to play the Don Adams role, but that still doesn't mean the movie would "work". I'll have to take the kids to see it now.

The casting for Hymie was perfect and I am not just saying this because Patrick Warburton is married to one of our classmates from high school.

I thought Get Smart was better and funnier than I expected going in. Steve Carrell is a funny guy and probably the best choice to update a Don Adams character (for what it's worth, I think he would make a better Inspector Closeau than Steve Martin is). The movie updates the TV series from the 1960's James Bond era to the 21st century Bourne era quite cleverly, while still incorporating all the familiar shtick from the TV series.

I also give the film credit for inventing a semi-plausible reason for a bumbler like Carrell being a top flight agent (the agency is running out of agents since the villainous KAOS has bumped off all their top flight people so analyst Carrell gets promoted to field agent status). Alan Arkin is very good as the Chief, as well.

I'm just sorry that Barbara Feldon didn't appear in the movie (although the film gets points for having Bernie Koppel, the original Siegfried, in a cameo).

And by the way, Mrs. SSS is very excited this weekend. I finally got my copy of Eastern Promises on DVD.

I missed Barbara Feldon as well. She always seemed very classy to me.

Does Patrick have any connections to Newport, RI? We knew Warburtons in Newport when we lived there.

I was kind of disapointed with the movie. Having grown up with the Nick at Nite reruns, I could see right away the Maxwell Smart character just wasn't there, subbing was Steve Carrell's character from The Office.

The movie felt generic in tone and the elements that made the show, such as the shoe phone, seemed forced in there just so they were there. I thought the final half hour was good, but it took an hour and a half to get there.

That movie was hilarious and exciting, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did.

Are you too young to have seen even the reruns of the original?

I'm not sure, I'm 18 years old. I never saw the original TV series, I guess it's a good thing because those here who have were not impressed with the movie.
