What's Happening with SSS

We went to see The Happening last night, the latest film from M. Night Shyamalan. This guy is a very talented director, but, as a writer, he had two script ideas and he's already used them. He really knows how to set up spooky, suspenseful scenes well, but the movie as a whole just leaves you saying "huh" at the end. It didn't work as either a character study of a couple under pressure or a cautionary science fiction tale or as a thriller. Shyamalan needs to get hold of a solid script written by someone else who knows what he is doing.
Haing said that, I must say that I was totally stunned by one scene about a third of the way into the film. Mark Wahlberg is in a crowded diner trying to find out what's going on and he has a conversation with a woman sitting next to him. This was classic film drama at its best, as this unknown actress in a few brief moments of screentime managed to display a range of emotions that was truly astonishing. She put Wahlberg to shame. I can't wait for the DVD of this film to come out so I can replay that scene over and over (there's also some nifty footage in there about a guy trying to make friends with a lion at the zoo).
I've seen a lot of movies in my time, and I can tell you this actress is going places. Give her a bit more screen time and the right role and we're talking Oscar, definitely.
