QoD 06/18/08A Double Play Wednesday “Sports jargon”
Remember, on Double Play Wednesday, you can answer the first set of questions OR wait for the second set to be posted, at least four hours later. If you answer these, your answers for the second set will not be counted for monthly points (you can always play for fun, of course!) I'll try to give a 10-15 minute warning before I post the second set.
Many of the most entertaining moments in sports come from the colorful (and often downright stupid) sayings which true fans of the sport know, but very few others do. In a few words, identify the event described by the phrase below. I’ve given you the sport that I had in mind, in order to avoid using a phrase which is used in another sense in a different sport. 10 points for each correct answer, no penalty for wrong guesses.

Sports is a wheelhouse subject for me, so I'm gonna take this one.
1. curveball pitch
2. three strikes in the 10th frame
3. a ball in a bunker
4. the goalposts
5. three goals made by the same player in the same game
6. getting served a technical foul
7. making contact with another car (i.e., bumping or crashing)

Better jump on this one! I can't imagine the second questiom being better for me than this one...
1. Uncle Charlie (baseball) - Curveball
2. Turkey out (bowling) - A turkey in 3 strikes in a row, so I'm assuming this means striking out in the 10th frame
3. Fried-egg (golf) - Stupidgolf! I'll guess a ball that hits the ground and doesn't move. I wonder how those guys do that....
4. Wishbone (football) - It's some kind of offensive formation
5. Hat trick (ice hockey) - Scoring 3 goals in one game
6. Teed him up (basketball) - No idea
7. Trading paint (auto racing) - Cars rubbing together during the course of the race, and usually at full speed

Sure on most of these, not sure at all about what's coming later so here goes...
1. Uncle Charlie (baseball) a weakly hit ball beat out for a hit
2. Turkey out (bowling) three strikes in the 10th frame
3. Fried-egg (golf) ball in a sand-trap partially buried or surrounded by the depression it created on impact
4. Wishbone (football) an offensive formation with one halfback and two fullbacks (also called a "Y" formation
5. Hat trick (ice hockey) 3 goals by a single player in a game
6. Teed him up (basketball) a blocked shot where the ball is batted sharply away from the basket
7. Trading paint (auto racing) guessing it's when two cars brush up against each other while side-by-side

Show which gets about as much of an audience as a professional hockey game

Set the trampoline out on the court for The Gorilla
7. Trading paint (auto racing)
Erasing the old sponsor off the car for the new one with more money

I don't know all of them, but a bird in the hand and all that.
1. Uncle Charlie (baseball)
The old bowlegged geezer they stick in a baseball uniform and have stand on the first base line.
2. Turkey out (bowling)
I've haven't heard of this specifically (I've always called it striking out or taking it off the sheet), but I assume that it's getting three strikes in the 10th frame.
3. Fried-egg (golf)
When your golf ball just splats out and lies there.
4. Wishbone (football)
A three back formation (a tailback on both sides of the fullback).
5. Hat trick (ice hockey)
Three goals by a player in one game.
6. Teed him up (basketball)
Calling a technical foul on a player or coach. If you're smart like Doc Rivers last night, you just call Joey Crawford a fried egg little jagoff in your head and carry on. Ha!
7. Trading paint (auto racing)
When cars jostle for position and bump one another.

1. Sad to say I've never heard this term.
2. Striking out in the 10th frame.
3. When your ball comes down in the sand and doesn't roll, producing an indentation that makes the ball look like the yolk of an egg. Not quite buried but not a clean lie either.
4. A backfield formation that has one running back lined up behind the quarterback and two other running backs flanking and behind the first one. It's rarely used in the pros, but colleges sometimes use it (although it's increasingly rare).
5. Three goals in one game.
6. A technical foul being called on a player.
7. When two cars bump as they race around the track.

In a bowling league and I know what a turkey is, not that I get many, but don't think I have ever heard this term. But I would guess it is to finish with 3 strikes in the tenth frame.
3. Fried-egg (golf)
Golf ball in a bunker that is still in its impact site and partially buried.
4. Wishbone (football)
Fullback behind the quarterback and two halfbacks behind the fullback and to each side like a Y or "wishbone" in shape.
5. Hat trick (ice hockey)
Three goals in one game.
6. Teed him up (basketball)
Don't know this one.
7. Trading paint (auto racing)
Cars bumping each other at high speed on the track.

Since I know some of these and I'm here now and maybe not later:
1. a curveball
2. Strike out in the tenth frame
3. nope
4. an offenseive formation
5. same as in soccer - three goals by the same player in the same game
6. giving a player or coach a technical foul
7. cars bumping one another - minor bumping during a race

4. Wishbone (football) - an offensive formation with three backs in the backfield with the backs forming a triangle close behind the quarterback, this formation is mostly used to run the triple option to either side of the field.
5. Hat trick (ice hockey) - one player scoring three goals in a single game
6. Teed him up (basketball) - the referee has given a technical foul to someone
7. Trading paint (auto racing) - bumping or rubbing together of cars mostly side-to-side

Bases loaded(Uncle Charlie was on My 3 sons - so I'm guessing 3 men on)
2. Turkey out (bowling)
3 strikes in a row - Don't recall hearing an 'out' after the term Turkey but I've got to go with it anyway.
3. Fried-egg (golf)
A Hole-In-One - I know we call a fried egg placed into a torn-out middle section of toast a hole-in-one - so I'm hoping the reverse holds as well.
4. Wishbone (football)
Field Goal (the goal posts sort of look like an upside-down wishbone)
5. Hat trick (ice hockey)
3 goals in one game by one player
6. Teed him up (basketball)
An assist for a layup - only thing I can thing of
7. Trading paint (auto racing)
Cars hitting or colliding with each other
