RIP Charlie Jones
Posted: Sun Jun 15, 2008 5:55 am
Veteran sportscaster who covered the AFL extensively during its early years and went on to NFL, college football, and the Olympics with NBC. Jones was frequently partnered with Merlin Olsen. Jones broadcast Super Bowl I (which was broadcast on both CBS and NBC) for NBC, as well as the Super Bowl III, the Joe Namath game.
Ironically, Jones died at home near San Diego while preparing to attend a dinner at Torrey Pines Country Club, which is hosting this week's US Open.
First Jim McKay, now Jones. It hasn't been a good week for veteran sportscasters (or news journalists either).
Age 77
