AFI Guess the 10 Top 10 Films contest

I meant to post this earlier this week, but here it is now. AFI is having a contest to guess the #1 movies in 10 select categories they're going to count down in a CBS special next Tuesday. The person who gets the most right will win $1,000 in Best Buy gift cards; there'll be a random draw in the event of a tie, which seems quite likely to me.

The contest runs until June 16, which is Monday, so get your picks in quick at the following URL (link to entry form and rules):

http://connect.afi.com/site/PageServer? ... weepstakes

In case anyone is interested, I've included my picks below, along with some of my reasoning. Maybe look at 'em after you've made your own guesses (not that I expect to win anyway). :D
Spoiler
I based these mostly on how well the various films have done in past lists of this kind, with the possible exception of my pick for the Western.

Guess the #1 ANIMATION --Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (this is the classic pick, although "Beauty and the Beast" and "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" were sorely tempting)

Guess the #1 COURTROOM DRAMA -- To Kill a Mockingbird (based on Atticus Finch being named the #1 hero in a past list)

Guess the #1 EPIC -- Gone With the Wind (I was torn between this and "Schindler's List")

Guess the #1 FANTASY -- The Wizard of Oz (also considered "It's a Wonderful Life")

Guess the #1 GANGSTER -- The Godfather (how could I not pick this one? BTW, Part II is listed under "Epics")

Guess the #1 MYSTERY -- Vertigo (because of its very high placement on the revised top 100 list, though for my taste it was too high on the list)

Guess the #1 ROMANTIC COMEDY -- Annie Hall (can't say exactly where it's been on previous lists, but Hollywood seems to love it)

Guess the #1 SCI-FI -- Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope; this part is in parentheses because to me this movie will ALWAYS be simply "Star Wars")

Guess the #1 SPORTS -- Raging Bull (filmmakers seem to worship this movie, though my personal, sentimental fave is "Field of Dreams")

Guess the #1 WESTERN -- High Noon (just cuz I like it so much; I know "The Searchers" ranked highest in the top 100, but I don't know why)

Rather than try to guess, I just picked my favorites. And no Horror category? No foreign film category? Oh well.
Spoiler
Guess the #1 ANIMATION --Fantasia - it's a tragedy they don't have Yellow Submarine, and I would never vote for a digital movie.

Guess the #1 COURTROOM DRAMA -- The Caine Mutiny - Bogart is the best.

Guess the #1 EPIC -- Lawrence of Arabia (I was torn between this and Dr. Zhivago) Peter O'Toole is the best.

Guess the #1 FANTASY -- Field of Dreams
Guess the #1 GANGSTER -- Key Largo (Bogart again!)
Guess the #1 MYSTERY -- Rear Window (No Birds? No horror category?)
Guess the #1 ROMANTIC COMEDY -- As Good as it Gets (I don;t like Helen Hunt but Jack Nicholson is the best.)

Guess the #1 SCI-FI -- Blade Runner (Planet of the Apes also a sentimental favorite)

Guess the #1 SPORTS --The Natural

Guess the #1 WESTERN -- High Noon (Last Picture Show and Giant are westerns? Who knew?)

They are going to have a separate host in each category. Most of them make sense, but a couple really come from left field.

Kirk Douglas - Epics
Clint Eastwood - Westerns

Perfect choices and always welcome on any show of this nature.

James Woods - Courtroom Dramas
Sean Astin - Fantasy
Sigourney Weaver - Sci Fi
Quentin Tarantino - Gangster
Gabriel Byrne - Mystery

No problems here.

Cuba Gooding Jr. - Sports

Letting him near anything that has the word "best" in it any more is an insult to the movie industry.

Jessica Alba - Romantic Comedy

Yes, she's a babe and better to look at than James Woods. But surely, there was someone else available rather than an actress whose "best" romantic comedy was Good Luck Chuck.

Jennifer Love Hewitt - Animated

What does she have to do with animated films?

I just ordered the new collector's edition DVD of High Noon which just came out this week. I hate double dipping on DVD's but since I didn't have this on DVD yet, it was a no-brainer.

Thanks for posting this because I didn't know how they were going to do it.

I have no problems the first seven, although Tartentino gives me the creeps.

I'm a little more forgiving of Cuba Gooding, Jr. than you are.

Not his choice of movie roles but his selection for this.

After all, "Show me the money!" is a famous line in a sports movie and he's the guy who said it.

As far as Jessica Alba goes, well, I guess Julia Roberts or Reese Witherspoon or Sandra Bullock were busy.

Or Kate Hudson. Or Cameron Diaz. Or Jennifer Aniston.

Or Drew Barrymore. Or......

Has Jennifer Love Hewitt does a bunch of voiceover work that I'm not aware of?

Yes, she's done a lot. Her most recent is Princess Kyla in Delgo.
