I'm back

#1 Post by nitrah55 » Mon Jun 09, 2008 7:21 am

Thanks for your notes, thoughts and prayers. They mean a lot to me.

Mom's wake and funeral were quiet and uplifting, much like her. We're all doing better, which is not to say, good.

She had spent the last 8 months shuttling between the hospital and a nursing home. She was never going to be as independent as she had been, so, we think of this as a blessing. Some blessings are hard to take, though.

I delivered some remarks at the funeral, on behalf of the family. An excerpt below will give you an idea what she was like.

While thinking about how best to remember Mom today, I thought it would be respectful to provide a more balanced picture and show you a side of her personality you may not have seen. With that in mind, I would like to share with you the nastiest thing I ever heard our mother say.

It was some years ago, when I was doing theatre work and living at home. I was in the cast of a show that, in addition to some other obvious flaws, had a leading man that was perhaps the most inept performer I have ever seen on a stage. I would come home from rehearsal venting about this stiff, mumbling and none-too-bright alleged actor. I would also tell Mom that, unlike most shows I had been in, I could not recommend that she see this one, unless she wanted to see the most sorry excuse for a thespian ever to tread the boards.

For whatever reason, Mom, against my advice, went to see this show which featured this complete no-talent in the leading role.

When I got home, I asked Mom, “So, what did you think of the show?”

Mom took a thoughtful pause and said, “Hm. You were right about the leading man.”

That was the nastiest thing I ever heard her say about anyone.

A great story.

And it is unfortunate that so few people could claim the same thing.

Thanks for sharing Nitrah.

Hugs to you.

You are fortunate to have a such a kind, loving mother. May she rest in peace now. Thanks for sharing.
