An "Aw" moment at Dog School

So, I had to take Lizbit to Dog School in between posts on the chimpanzee thread. Lizzle's new best bud is Dutch, an enormous, black Great Dane, and both of them kept trying to inch closer to each other when they were supposed to be practicing "down stay." At the end of class, they finally were permitted to get close to each other to bump noses. After a bit of mutual sniffing, Dutch began to nuzzle Libzit's face. Lizbit picked up one leg and heaved her paw over Dutch's giant head. She started stroking between Dutch's ears as if she were petting the big dog.

Awwwww.... Even the PetSmart shoppers outside the training area were watching and smiling. Alas, nobody had a camera ready, or there would have been another sweet doggie moment for YouTube.

I did not know dogs would pet other dogs.

Good to know.

That is a wonderful moment! Maybe they will do it again next time.

Dog School must be different from puppy class. The puppies were allowed to run around unleashed for five minutes at the start of every class. The star of the class, a beautiful Doberman, stood back a bit and watched as if aghast at all that puppyish behavior. Casey never made any particular friends in class but did enjoy the romping.

Where is a camera phone when you need one!

This sounds awfully cute.

Lizbit's puppy class had the romping. That's when she got into her no-holds-barred wrestling matches with Remy, the chow. She wanted to wrestle with the Great Dane, too, but Dutch outweighs Lizbit by about 3 to 1, so it didn't seem like such a good idea. The other two dogs in the class are tiny (a petite beagle and a chihuahua-yorkie mix), so they could be injured if the bigger dogs started rolling around.

Skoop, I'm not at all sure that dogs pet other dogs. It sure looked like it, but it may have had some other motivation for Lizbit, such as trying to bluff the other dog into thinking she was dominant. The instructor suggested that since she'd done and repeated this motion on her own, it would be possible to train her to do it on command as a cute and unusual trick. I'm not confident that Annie would sit still for being Lizbit's "pettee" for practice, however.

I once burned my face, but that was because I made the mistake of putting matches in my nest, which aren't such a good idea when your bushy tail causes so much friction....

A very cute thing, to be sure, but I admit to being a tad confoosed. Does Dutch know he's actually Danish? And doesn't this confuse him?

I agree: AWWWW!! Nice visualization! That would be so cute if you could convince her that doing it again would be treat-worthy. :)

Princess graduates from the beginner class on Friday! It was because of your rave reviews of PetSmart that we decided to go with their class. I hope you keep posting on the progress of her classes, as I would be interested in seeing how she does and what she likes etc.

On Saturday we were at an event when Eric said, "Oh look there's Comet's mom." It was funny because it was then that we realized we know all the names of the puppies in the class, but none of the names of the parents. :)

That's the truth. In fact, "Jasmine's mother" is the one who took the photo of Lizbit that is my current avatar, but I didn't know her name until she gave me a business card with her e-mail address so I could get the photo.
