Our refrigerator has a water filter. There is an indicator on the front of the refrigerator that lets us know when it is time to change the filter. Does anyone know how accurate the indicator is? Is it similar to the alert I receive on my printer saying that black ink is low, but really I have a ton of black ink left? How does the indicator know that the filter needs to be changed? We have a pretty heavy duty water filter for the house, so I'm not as concerned as if this was our only one. I do want to be safe though, and not just be a penny pincher. LOL

Our water filter comes with little date stickers and I believe that we are supposed to change it every six months. We just do it.

If you drink water or use ice made while the red light is on, its too late you are DOOOMMMMEED. Unless there is really something wrong with the water in your house its just a matter of taste not safety. If there is a safety problem with the tap water in your house a refrigerator water filter isn't gonna save you. I let my filter go for months and couldn't tell the difference.

It probably measures the amount of water used. If you have a filter for the whole house, you don't need it. But why do you need a filter for the whole house? Someone drinks out of the toilet?

I'm with Suitman. Don't kill yourself to go get a replacement filter, but put it on your list of things to do. They're not that expensive and usually last me 9 - 12 months. We don't use that much water or ice as I have a separate free standing ice machine we use more often than the one on the refrigerator.

I don't know if the filter helps the ice from getting a bad taste or not, but I'm not willing to find out!

We bought the fridge after buying the house last June. I changed the filter in March. We have a well, so that is why we have a big water filter for the house. Wellmans must have a well you know.............. lol (and/or be really healthy people)

Our refrigerator also has a water filter. We change it whenever the little red light comes on. As to how accurate it is, I have no idea. I'm not even sure what causes the light to come on - just a matter of time (six months or whatever) or amount of water filtered or whatever else.
