A New Adventure Begins

After several months of playing the "keep the house in tip-top shape and uncluttered for prospective buyers" game, a nice couple decided that they liked our place just as much as we did and bought it. So, we will be heading off to Iowa to be closer to family come the end of the month. I am sorry to be leaving but Lady G was feeling a bit isolated here and wanted to be closer to her family - so off we go.

This will be another interesting change for me and Lady G. I grew up in New York, moved to Vegas, then to SoCar and now to the midwest. I think I have pretty much experienced as much of the different corners of this great country as possible. Life can be full of exciting adventures and this will add another chapter to mine. I cannot imagine what could be next. Who can tell.

Good luck. You're fortunate you're able to do this and I hope Lady G will be happy there. It is hard being away from family. Have you found a place to live in your new location yet?

Nope. Lady G has be perusing the net plus she has been in daily contact with an agent in Des Moines who sends her e-flyers regarding homes she thinks we might like. She has quite a list of houses for us to look. There is certainly no shortage. We will probably be staying in a furnished apartment for a month while we find a place. I already have most of the other ducks lined up - financing for the new place, the movers, etc. I am not relishing moving my business and going through all those address changes. But, it's a necessary evil.

I have always wanted to see one live - albeit at a distance. The agent we have been in contact with told us that she has never experienced a tornado in all the years she has lived in Des Moines. And, judging from the maps I have seen, DM is just on the fringe of tornado alley. I haven't decided which route we will take driving up but I think we'll steer clear of Oklahoma.

While I don't know that I want to move there, we plan on doing one of those summer cruises.

I would like to visit Dutch Harbor and see some of the vessels they show on Deadliest Catch. We love that show.

We lived in the Mason City/Clear Lake area back in the mid '80s...nicest people in the world...just not a whole lot to do out there...

Actually, I have lived in Oklahoma for more than three decades. During those years, I personally have seen funnels in the sky only twice -- once in Florida and once in Michigan.

We're moving to the Des Moines / Ankeny / Urbandale / Altoona area. Lady G's daughter lives in Des Moines so she wants to be relatively (no pun intended) close to her. Mason City is a bit north of where we plan on moving to.

We're not really looking to 'do' much there as my business can be run from anywhere (it's done online) and Lady G can do her working at a church anywhere.

I am actually looking into the possibility of getting into the Real Estate world as an agent. Despite the long and unfriendly hours, it seems like a field that suits me to a tee. In that, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. Of course, I may be wrong in that way of thinking. I just have to find out the where's and what's I need to do to get a real estate license.

I've lived in California my entire life (except for a five months in Ireland) and have seen one funnel in Amarillo, TX and had one land on my head in Wisconsin. One of the scariest times of my life.

I've seen funnels in Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. The closest I came to one was in Jackson, Mississippi. That was less than a mile behind me.

Congratulations on selling your house in non-conducive market. Good luck on your move -- I know you'll love Iowa. You may have to jet back to LV every once in a while for some excitement, but on the whole, I think I'd rather live in unexciting towns.

I'd make sure not to buy a place with a basement.

I agree. I grew up in NJ in the armpit of the Statue of Liberty, lived in Chicago for about 20 years, and now live in a small town in Indiana. The only other place I've been that I'd like to live in is Iowa. My husband's kinfolk are Iowa farmers about 70 miles east of Sioux CIty. It's unbelievably peaceful there.
