Each question you choose to answer doubles your score. The first question you answer correctly is worth 10 points, the second is worth another 10, to make 20, and so on. Since there are 5 questions, that means a perfect score today is worth 160 points. But be careful! I will try to trick you.
1. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you dispose of it?
2. What is the name of the U. S. federal holiday that fell on February 18th of 2008?
3. Canadian geese were described by Linnaeus in his work Systema Naturae. Although their numbers were greatly decreased in the twentieth century, they have now increased to the point where they are the most common waterfowl species in North America. They are monogamous, and most couples stay together all their lives. In the preceding three sentences, there is one error of fact. What is it?
4. What is the correct spelling of the name (first and last) of the man who wrote the Broadway musical “The Music Man?”
5. A tractor trailer and a Volkswagen Rabbit have a head-on collision on a highway. The 16,000 pound truck was traveling north at 35 mph, and the 1800 pound Rabbit was traveling south at 55 mph before the collision. Which one exerted the greater force on the other?

4. Pass. Should know it, but don't even have a good guess.

5. OK, I know this is a trick question because you don't say anything about acceleration, but I can't decide whether the trick is they're equal because acceleration is zero, or that the t/t blows thru the rabbit so fast it doesn't matter at all. No answer.

I'm not sure if I'll be around later to answer after/if you've seen the question I asked about whether the doubling gets reset after an incorrect answer, so I'm just going to answer now. Probably wouldn't matter anyway, because I'd probably go for it. Ha!

- Charcoal
2. What is the name of the U. S. federal holiday that fell on February 18th of 2008? - George Washington's Birthday
What is it? - Linnaeus never saw a Canadian goose in his life
4. What is the correct spelling of the name (first and last) of the man who wrote the Broadway musical “The Music Man?” - Probably someone AnnieC. admires
5. A tractor trailer and a Volkswagen Rabbit have a head-on collision on a highway. The 16,000 pound truck was traveling north at 35 mph, and the 1800 pound Rabbit was traveling south at 55 mph before the collision. Which one exerted the greater force on the other? - Let's see, I seem to recall from physics that force = mass times acceleration, and if both vehicles were travelling at a constant speed, there was no acceleration on either of their parts, therefore, force would equal zero? That doesn't seem right, but it's the best my little squirrel brain can come up with. I say they both exerted the same amount of force on each other, which may or may not be equal to zero

First one, greatly decreased in the past. Given the number on golf courses the last one has to be true and pretty sure the middle one is

Definitely a trick but it is late so I will guess. Something to do with being a constant speed in a single direction resulting in no acceleration. Or deceleration at point of impact. Or something. Probably not the right answer as it seems the obvious answer but what the hell, I will say the truck

Damn! I knew that the name is Canada Goose and they are only "Canadian" I suppose if they actually reside in Canada. But didn't even notice that. Whether Linnaeus knew of them I know not. But having been published in the early 1700's I suspect they were known to him.

Tricky Thursday
1. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you dispose of it?
Okay, I've been thinking about this a lot. The answer is newspaper ink. The ink is black when it prints words on the newspaper you buy. Then you use it by reading the words in stories about crooks and politics, and you see red! Then you are so mad you crumple it all up to throw it away, which smudges the ink all over the paper so everything turns gray.
2. What is the name of the U. S. federal holiday that fell on February 18th of 2008?
Mr. President George Washington's Birthday.
3. Canadian geese were described by Linnaeus in his work Systema Naturae. I've never known any Canadian geese, only the American ones that live at the Duck Pond. Although they have a lot to say, they are not very conversational. Nevertheless, I have gotten the impression that they consider themselves Citizens of the World, rather than belonging to any particular nationality. Therefore, I think that calling them Canadian is neither accurate nor zoologically correct.
4. What is the correct spelling of the name (first and last) of the man who wrote the Broadway musical “The Music Man?”
Mr. Andrew Lloyd Amadeus Hammerstein

Boy, that's one fat rabbit! I think that if they hit each other they are both in a world of hurt and it doesn't make one bit of difference. Been there, done that.

4. What is the correct spelling of the name of the man who wrote the Broadway musical “The Music Man?” Meredith Willson
5. A tractor trailer and a Volkswagen Rabbit have a head-on collision on a highway. The 16,000 pound truck was traveling north at 35 mph, and the 1800 pound Rabbit was traveling south at 55 mph. Which one exerted the greater force on the other? The forces are equal and opposite. Some of you correctly cited Newton’s second law, which says that force = mass x acceleration. In this case, since the masses are decidedly unequal, so, too, must be the accelerations. But the really operative law is the third law, which says that for every action, there must be an equal and opposite reaction.

No doubt you are correct but having seen a tractor trailer truck and car that had met head on I can say unequivocally that there was nothing equal about the result! I will have to chew on this one a bit more as physics was not really a strong suit. Somehow having trouble getting past the definition of acceleration (none if moving at a constant speed?) versus "deceleration" (negative acceleration?) that results at the time of impact. Since the truck has less deceleration at impact (it is afterall going to plow right through the Rabbit!) perhaps that is what makes up for the greater mass? Hmm...mrkelley23 wrote:QoD 06/05/08 Tricky Thursday Answers/Points

I'll agree with tanstaafl.
I don't see how the small car is going exert as much force as the truck. When the truck and car collide the truck is going to continue forward (albeit at a lower speed) but the car is going to go backward. Why would that be if the force exerted by both vehicles is equal?
You say 1800 pounds at 55 mph = 16,000 pounds at 35 mph.
Let's say a 16,000 pound truck going 35 mph collided head-on with another 16,000 pound truck going 55 mph. Would the force exerted by each still be exactly the same?
