Dear friends

Eight months after breaking her hip and two months after an attack of kidney stones, my mom died last night. I was blessed to be with her and help her as best I could.

For all the prayers and good thoughts given by you on her behalf, I thank you.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
