The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and five members of his coaching staff Saturday in a stunning early season overhaul with the club sitting in last place in the American League East.
Bench coach Ramón Vázquez, hitting coach Peter Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin were also dismissed. Game planning and run prevention coach Jason Varitek, who is in his 30th year with the organization as a player and coach, "has been reassigned to a new role within the organization," according to a statement from the team.
Cora, 50, was in the second year of a three-year, $21.75 million contract extension he signed in July 2024 that made him one of the highest-paid managers in Major League Baseball. The deal expires after the 2027 season.

Correction: The deal expired 27 games into the 2026 season.

Philadelphia Phillies wrote:The Phillies have relieved Rob Thomson of his duties as manager today. Bench coach Don Mattingly has been named interim manager through the end of the 2026 season.
Additionally, Dusty Wathan, who had served as third base coach since the 2018 season, has been promoted to bench coach.
Promotions ripple through the major and minor league coaching staff.
Everyone in Philly loves Topper. However, when a team with so much strength suffers from a scoring drought, sloppy fielding, and a recent 10-game losing streak, somebody must pay the price.

"Cora was subsequently suspended through the 2020 playoffs for his role in the Astros' scandal.[6] After his suspension ended, he returned to the Red Sox as their manager.[7]"
Where are the boos? Seriously. You go Red Sox..

Unlike the players, he was punished (and forgiven).

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Phillies president Dave Dombrowski offered Thomson’s job to Cora. Dombrowski and Cora worked together in Boston from 2017 to 2019.
Mattingly, the former Yankees star and Dodgers and Marlins manager, is the father of Phillies general manager Preston Mattingly.
The Phillies, Flyers and 76ers have one another’s backs as they try to turn around their seasons (with some success in the past few days). The fans are doing their part too. The booed Phillies players who were in the stands at a Flyers playoff game.

Apparently, the Celtics were taking lessons from the Red Sox this week.
