Just learned today that a movie based on James Michener's "Caravans" about Afghanistan was filmed in Iran in 1978-just prior to the Islamic Revolution. I love the book-but it could not have been easy to follow the book closely-but-hey-it has Anthony Quinn, gunrunning and some awesome landscapes that haven't been filmed for awhile -so awesome.

Loved the book but didn't know there had been a movie made from it.

It was directed by James Fargo, who was a production manager on
Jaws.

Same here. I remember telling people after 9/11 to read Caravans to grasp a little about Afghanistan and realize that the hard-core mullahs from the book were the ones in charge.
