My Favorite Real-Life "Meet Cute" Story

Involves a second cousin in Saskatchewan and his wife. We visited them in the early 1980's and had contact with that wing of the family for a few years at that time-but we have since lost contact.

So, maudlin as it may seem, every few months I do an obituary search on various wings of the family and other long-lost friends.
I see that the wife passed away in January 2026 at age 79 and her husband (age 93) is still alive.

He was somewhere in his early 40' when they married and she was late 20's with a couple of boys from a previous marriage. One of these boys was my age.

He lived (lives) on a farm in southern Saskatchewan about 130 miles from Regina. It turns out that there was a adult singles dance every week in Regina. I am not sure how often he went prior to meeting her-but suddenly at one of the dances he met a very interesting young-ish woman.

Not sure how much info was exchanged, but he went every week for the next 4 weeks on the chance that she would be there. Well, it took a few weeks for her to show up-but finally she was there and apparently things worked as a long-term marriage resulted and a couple of more bouncing baby boys showed up.

I met my wife at a country bar about a week before she turned 22.

I was thinking about the line of the family that includes the Saskatchewan bunch and while it is not quite "James Tyler with a living grandson" my paternal great-grandfather was born in 1849, 1850, or 1851. I forget which so I just go with 1850. He was 52 when my grandfather was born in 1902 and Grandpa was 40 when my dad was born in 1942.

So we have a Grandfather-Grandson line that stretches at least 176 years. There are no other grandchildren from the line that would be younger than my dad other than his sister who is 2 years younger and who is in very tough shape.

I met my wife at a bar (happy hour).

She worked at Mobil, where I had worked previously. I met a co-worker for lunch and during lunch he spoke about the new 'cute girl' I needed to meet. We went back to Mobil office after eating and he took me by her desk. She was not there, so we left. As we were waiting for the elevator, it opened up and a girl I knew came out, with another girl. I spoke to the girl I knew, "How ya been? What's up with Brian (her husband)? eyv. Then she left to go back to her desk. My friend then told me that other girl was the one he wanted to introduce me to. I don't know why we just didn't go back by her desk but we didn't. Fast forward 2 1/2 moths. I'm at the bar happy hour, I see a bunch of folks from Mobil I knew, and there she was. So I went over started talking to my former co-workers, then introduced myself to the 'cute girl'. We are heading to Hawaii tomorrow to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, staying at the same place we honeymooned.

My parents met at a square dance. He spotted her across the room and thought she was cute, so when she came by during the dance he gave her hand a little squeeze. The next time she came around, she squeezed his hand back.

I was in a backpacking/camping PE class in college when the most beautiful woman in the world walked into the classroom. Back then I was an extremely introverted nerd (kind of similar to me now) but I had a strong feeling that I needed to get to know her. I finally spotted her early one morning in the cafeteria. Summoning up all my courage, I said, “Good morning.” She said,”Good morning,” and kept walking. This went on daily for weeks. Finally it was the weekend of the camping trip, where I would surely impress her with my manly skills, but she wasn’t there. (Mid-terms were the next week, so she was busy studying, and would take the trip the next weekend with the other section of the class,) That was good, since I brought up the rear. But on Monday at the cafeteria, I said, “Good morning, would you like to hear about the trip?” She said, “Yes”, so I finally got the chance to eat and talk with her, and we’ve been married almost 46 years now.
