#2. "Black and Gold" - Sam Sparro (2008)
This is Australian singer Sam Sparro's best known song, a hit all over the world... but not in the United States. Unless you happened to be shopping in a Mecca on a late night in 2021, you have probably never heard this absolute gem before. I'm not sure what the colors black and gold have to do with Sparro's belief that there must be a higher power out there, but the song just works. I wish it had been an earworm for longer, but at least it caught my attention before it disappeared, and I have played the absolute hell out of this one on YouTube over the past few years...
#1. "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" - Scissor Sisters (2006)
Never in music history has a song been more ironically titled. When I first heard Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," I thought it was easily the greatest disco song ever recorded after the disco era. Then Mecca Radio introduced me to this song five years ago. "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" was a #1 smash in more countries around the world than you can shake a stick at. Yet despite Scissor Sisters hailing from the United States, this song got completely ignored here. Utterly criminal. That's Elton John on piano in this song, riffing on Frankie Valli's "December 1963." This song is just pure fun that should make anyone want to get up and dance, and without Mecca Radio, like the previous 99 songs in this countdown, I would have never known it even existed...
I hope everyone out there (LOL!) enjoyed the countdown! If I introduced even one person to a new song they liked, it was worth it...
