Dr. Henry C. Lee, the internationally acclaimed forensic scientist who worked on some of the most closely watched criminal cases in U.S. history, including the O.J. Simpson murder trial and the JonBenét Ramsey investigation, has died at 87, according to the University of New Haven where he was a professor.
Lee died peacefully Friday at his home in Henderson, Nevada, after a brief illness, according to his family and the university where he worked for more than 50 years.
The university said Lee became widely known to the public during the 1995 O.J. Simpson trial, where his testimony on crime‑scene evidence drew national attention and helped elevate forensic science as a central component of modern criminal trials. He later provided investigative assistance or consultation in other high‑profile cases, including the 1996 killing of 6‑year‑old JonBenét Ramsey in Colorado, as well as the Laci Peterson murder, the disappearance of Chandra Levy, the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart and forensic analysis related with the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
