#35. "See You in the Afterlife" - Foster the People (2024)

The group that burst onto the scene before they even had a record deal when their song "Pumped Up Kicks" went viral in 2009 is still around and releasing new music. This is the most recent song to appear in the Mecca 100, not even a full two years old yet, but has been played a lot on Mecca radio since last summer. While it doesn't have the epic bassline of "Kicks," it has some snazzy synth work to drive it along that I quite like...

#34. "Wanted" - Jessie James (2009)

Jessie James may be better remembered for starring in a reality TV show with her husband, NFL'er Eric Decker, and appearing on Dancing With the Stars than she is for this song that first got her name out there right after she turned 21. Powerful badass country pop that graced one of the early Mecca CD's in 2013. Love this...

#33. "Not Meant To Be" - Theory of a Deadman (2008)

The group that was brought to prominence by Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger had their biggest official US hit with this song, which reached..... #55. Damn. At least it made the Mecca CD, and quickly became a favorite of mine. This song has something in common with the previous entry as well... both featured Kara DioGuardi as co-writers...

#32. "Dominick the Donkey" - Lou Monte (1960)

As much as I hate Christmas music, and it being unavoidable in my job, for every piece of garbage like the Chipmunks and Feliz Navidad, there is the occasional song that endears itself to me. This is the first true Christmas song to appear in this countdown (there will be another!!!), and got played a lot during my first few Christmases at Mecca in the late 90's and early 2000's. And I swear I have not heard them play it in over 20 years.... why!?!?

#31. "Me Too" - Meghan Trainor (2016)

Meghan had the great misfortune of launching her career with one of the most godawful songs of the entire 21st Century, 2014's "All About That Bass." She's actually not a bad singer, and her other songs actually do a nice job of mixing modern millennial music with that 60's soulful girl group sound. Another thing most of her songs have in common is a huge ego... and this one doesn't even try to hide it. I don't care, it's infectious and I love it. This got played a lot in the post-CD era, usually during the live radio shows we're tortured with. And yes, this song came a couple years before "Me Too" took on a different meaning...
