RIP Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh's last remaining daily newspaper, which started publication in 1786, will close up shop totally on May 3. The other major newspaper, the Tribune-Review, has been all-digital for a decade.

Sad news. Peter Smith, who covered religious stories (and others), is a friend. I suppose he'll continue to write for the digital edition, if there is one.

Melly, do you know Diana Nelson of the PPG? She and my friend Chris Arvidson co-edited a book on baseball essays, of which I got to be a part. I met Diana at a reading, and really dug being able to talk about six and eight sports deadline every night, and writing sports columns, and all of the insider gibberish.
Diana's essay is on Roberto Clemente, and her growing up admiring a great person.

Based on the link in my original post, it appears there will not be a digital version of the paper, unless events have changed in the last couple of weeks.
I have been "receiving" the digital version of the AJC since January 1 and I've been pleasantly surprised. They have standalone articles you can click on or link to but they also have a complete epaper that looks just like the old printed paper. A couple of key differences. In recent months, they had delivered the print paper to me around midnight (it used to come in at four or five in the morning). As a result, their deadline was early afternoon, and they couldn't report on late afternoon or night sporting or news events. If I wanted to read about most Braves games, I'd have to wait until two days after the game was actually played. Now, they have complete sports coverage of all the day's games the next day. Also, their pages don't have a fixed length. If an article runs long, they just extend the bottom of the page a few inches to fit it all in. They also have full-color versions of the daily as well as Sunday comics, and an extensive selection of daily puzzles. And I'm paying $10 a month now instead of six times that for the print paper.

This is the model my chain is pushing. We close the overnight edition around 2am ET, so we can get in a lot of actual coverage of evening events. In print, we can preview a thing, and analyze it afterward, but not really cover it live.
Also, once you are logged in to any one of the papers, you can read content from all 29 of them. Not having a length requirement is pretty great, too; you just add more pages if you have longer stories or more stories. It's not bound by how much advertising we sold.
But pop-ups suck.

What is the name of the book? I would love to read it.
