Man dies after being sucked into Long Island MRI machine
A 61-year-old man in New York has died after he was sucked into a magnetic resonance imaging machine this week, Nassau County police said Friday. The man was wearing a large metal chain and entered a room without authorization as the MRI machine, which uses a strong magnetic field, was running at a medical office in Westbury on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The metal necklace caused him “to be drawn into the machine which resulted in a medical episode,” police said, noting the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m.
What makes this story especially creepy is that one of the characters in the recent Final Destination Bloodlines dies in almost the exact same way. In the movie, the MRI machine accidentally goes to full power and the man gets pinned to the front of the machine by his body jewelry. Then, a wheelchair gets sucked into the machine, pushing his body through first.

I didn't put this in Meanwhile, in Florida, because I felt it was too serious a subject to fit with the general tone of that thread.

The article quoted says he "entered the room without authorization." This is incorrect. His wife had just had a scan and was having trouble getting off the table, and asked for his help. He was escorted into the room by a staff member. The scan was completed, but the magnet was still energized. He had a 20-pound chain around his neck for weight training. I haven't seen a description of his injury, but his neck was probably damaged beyond repair.
