Any talk of Oscar noms and such for this film?
I encourage all to read the book by Alexandra Fuller. It might speak more to females than males.
I loved 3 of her books.
1) "Dogs"
2) Scribbling the Cat"
3) "Cocktail Hour under the Tree of Forgetfulness"-This book is easily in my permanent top-ten favorite books and might even be in the top 5.
However, I actively dislike and maybe even detest some of her other books.

Re: To SSS-"Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight"
Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight is playing in limited release at four locations around the country. It's playing in two theaters in Atlanta, both about 25 miles from where I live, so I doubt I'll be going to see it theatrically. Last weekend, it did $36,000 of business at those four theaters (its first and probably last week of release) to rank 21st at the box office for the weekend. It actually did better than Sovereign, a movie I went to see today, which is playing on 54 screens nationwide (and one in Atlanta). For those curious, 56 films made some amount of money at the box office this weekend.
It's been released by Sony, so it's got a major studio behind it. For what it's worth, $9,000 per theater over a three-day weekend translates to about 400-700 tickets sold per theater, which is pretty good for a movie with no advertising or in-theater trailers. Considering the two theaters in Atlanta where it's playing, I doubt the film did much business there. So, I'm guessing the other two screens were probably in NY or LA, where they could get better word-of-mouth and media publicity.
Dogs has gotten generally good reviews, usually in the 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 out of four stars. Of course, very few critics actually reviewed the film. It did play last fall at a couple of film festivals and got a couple of nominations at the festivals. I'm not sure if it's eligible for the Oscars this year, but if it is, there's very little chance of getting any notice.

I just learned that Dogs is coming to the local art theater next week (and probably similar art theaters nationally). That theater is close enough for me to see it fairly easily, and I'll probably go for discount Tuesday next week. My guess is that the movie will probably be playing at about 50 locations next week.

Drove about an hour and a half last night to see it. Given the amount of time that I spend immersed in the Fuller universe through Alexandra's (BoBo's) books-some I liked (loved) and some I detested-I needed to see this in the theater.silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 6:36 amI just learned that Dogs is coming to the local art theater next week (and probably similar art theaters nationally). It is not a "pretty" story and to no one's surprise-there were only about 6 of this in the theater-I don't expect major grosses out of this.
However, unless there is some sort of age limitation, I will be very surprised if Lexi Ventner who plays Alexandra as a young girl doesn't get nominated for best actress.
This 4-minute clip is Embeth Davidtz talking about Lexi.

We were talking about possible Oscar noms on the way home and we both agree on that one and we won't be surprised if the lady who plays the maid gets a nom for supporting actress and/or maybe the girl who plays "Van" the older sister-I just thought of that one now and some trauma she goes through (molested by a neighbor) might help her there.
Embeth Davidtz who directs and also plays the mother might get a nom for Best Actress. To my early surprise, when I first started watching clips I learned that she had played "Helen Hirsch" in Schindler's List. It seems like she would have been older now. But I can see the resemblance now.
"Helen Hirsch" was Ralph Fiennes main torture victim
