Over all a wild game. Betting strategy is out the window on this. Going into final jeopardy, the two leaders (Jacob and Bevin) were tied at 13,600 and third place (Vivek) was at 12,000. The category was national parks.
The answer was Carlsbad Caverns. Vivek 11,998 and missed. Bevin's answer was just "Carlsbad" which was ruled incorrect because they were looking for the name of the park. She bet 13,000. Jacob went all in and answered "Carlsbad Cavrans" which was ruled incorrect because the spelling changed the pronunciation. Tough ruling but consistent with J! norms. Bevin won with 600. Personally, I think Vivek's best bet would have been 1,601 to cover a zero bet by either of the other two because they would have to go all in to match each other. Betting from third place should try to give you the best chance on a miss by the other two or a triple stumper. Bevin's wager to me made the least sense, but she got away with it. I think in a tie for first place you need to either go all in or zero. But that's just my opinion

Agreed. If I ever go there, I'm 99% certain my <lack of> betting strategy would be my downfall.

Without looking at the spoiler, as I haven't watch the game yet,
Depending on my confidence in the category (life long US Resident and U.S. traveler) and my confidence in my opponents' abilities to get the correct answer, my wagers would be:
If in 1st or 2nd with 13,600: If I felt either of the others was knowledgeble enough, I'd have to wager the entire amount. If I didn't have confidence in them, I'd wager nothing.
if in 3rd with 12,000: $2,000. If either misses, or all miss, I liklely win, thinking they will both wager enough to defeat me should I wager it all.
Like Beebs said, it migh be my downfall.
Now, if the question is about some other country's national park, I'm toast.

O.K. I just watched it (a benefit of working from home, taking a 20 minute unscheduled break

)
The category was U.S. National Parks, not just National Parks, so my confidence would be much higher.
As a follow-up to my previous comments, I would have felt confident the other contestents could know the anwser, so:
If tied for first, I'm all in.
if second, again $2,000, though Krox's number in his spoiler is really a more intelligent wager.
BTW, I would have answered correctly, but would have been in third place going in. Not a night of categories in my wheelhouse.
Bevin, btw, is cute and truly animated, bringing a lot of personal excitement to the stage. She could get annoying if on for more than a few days, though.

"Like Beebs said, it migh be my downfall."
Bit I'm honored to be mistaken for tgirl but...
With that said I woulda spelled the final right I wouldn't have had so much to wager with.

Due to the NBA playoffs, my ABC station didn't air J! until 9 PM. As I have to get up on workdays at 5:30, that's when I go to sleep.
I just watched that show and am now watching Friday's episode, which was aired at its usual time.

that was a terrible ruling, it was completely phonetic. "vr" make exactly the right sound. you hear the V The next sound that comes out of your mouth is the r. that letter in the middle is not heard at all.
I know I am talking a little bit over the top but It is more on the show that I am talking about the anyone since I really do not understand the issue with the phonetics here. I will say I calmed down a lot since I wrote this for j board but it made me wonder for a few minutes if they just cancel the phonetic allowance rule altogether when I watched it the first time.
I feel the question was also definitely western us centric. (given there are many caverns national parks in other areas, which is the ones I learned in school) I am not saying that there cannot be any questions about the western United States but this just was a little too up in the air.
I don't think I have ever seen the contestants so out of control with their body in excitement. (and I mean that positively) I hope she enjoyed that win. even if I disagree with the ruling she there is no reason she should not celebrate.

How does J! handle regional dialects? Would I be counted wrong if FJ was "The capital of the United States" and I wrote down "What is Warshington D.C.?" That's literally how I and everyone else around here pronounces it.
I only ask because I can see "cavrans" being a regional pronunciation of "caverns." Obviously, people should still know how to spell their regionalisms correctly...

Let's say the Final Jeopardy category is Scumbags And Sleazeballs, and the clue is:
"This former Packers quarterback sent a dick pic to a sidelines reporter when he was with the Jets, and he helped divert money intended for welfare recipients toward building a volleyball stadium"
If a contestant writes, "Who is Brett Farve?" (instead of Favre) would they accept it?

The pronunciation would be the same so they should accept it.

Maybe in your neck of the woods, not in mine.

There was another weird Final Jeopardy on Monday night's show. The FJ answer was: “In 1896, the Vassar-educated wife of this man wrote, ‘Thousands of dollars may be paid for a copy of Shakespeare.’
Henry Clay Folger
Only one contestant got the right answer, Emily Croke from Denver, who won the game. It turns out she had a bit of an advantage going into FJ. The wife mentioned in the clue was Croke's great-great-great aunt, also named Emily. Some people on the J! board felt this was an unfair advantage. I thought it was similar to the question they asked a few years ago about the Model A Ford that was used by Georgia Tech as its "mascot" in pre-game festivities. I knew the answer immediately, but it stumped the three actual contestants on the show. If I'd been on that show, it would have been a lucky break for me, but nothing sinister.

Wow, a final jeopardy I woulda got!
I wouldn't have gotten Tonight's. The answer was Invisible Man, the book by Ralph Ellison.
