Theme Daze Game 1

#1 Post by mrkelley23 » Mon May 19, 2025 4:55 am

Before you play -- please read the instructions and rules that are pinned to the top of the Bored. Addendum to the instructions: theme words may be homophones or very close approximations of the spellings of the answers.

Theme Daze 1
1. This became a slang term for a certain game show contestant who loses everything, so named because of Robby Roseman’s answer to the question, “with what animal did Hannibal cross the Alps?”

2. Biological order that includes lemurs, tarsiers, and humans.

3. Its starting squares are c1 and f1 (or c8 and f8).

4. In Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, this class can use foci such as totems, pipes, or dreamcatchers to cast spells more effectively.

5. First name of the animated ursine who always wanted a “pic-a-nic basket!”

6. This Leslie Charteris character was played by George Sanders, Roger Moore, and Val Kilmer, among others.

7. The poet and satirist who is credited with both “damning with faint praise” and “to err is human, to forgive, divine.”

8. The team name that Stan Musial, Roger Wehrli, and Albert Pujols all had in common.

9. The operatic lead singer of this heavy metal band came out as gay on MTV in 1998.

10. John Wayne, Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and Michael Anderson Jr. played the title offspring in this 1965 western.

Theme Daze 1
1. This became a slang term for a certain game show contestant who loses everything, so named because of Robby Roseman’s answer to the question, “with what animal did Hannibal cross the Alps?”

L(l)ama

2. Biological order that includes lemurs, tarsiers, and humans.

Primates

3. Its starting squares are c1 and f1 (or c8 and f8).

Bishop

4. In Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, this class can use foci such as totems, pipes, or dreamcatchers to cast spells more effectively.

Paladin

I played D&D one time for about a total of 30 minutes back in my misspent youth (needless to say, under several influences, hey, it was the 80s!) and I remember Sweet Fanny Adams about it all, except there were paladins, which only impressed me because of Charlemagne and (of course) Have Gun, Will Travel. Judging from the rest of the answers, these are religious figures which I don't think a knight would qualify. I'm assuming there were also wizards and shit, is that more religious, I dunno,,,,

5. First name of the animated ursine who always wanted a “pic-a-nic basket!”

Yogi Bear

Hey, Boo Boo! HB denied that he was named after Yogi Berra. Sure, Jan. Just like that cockamamie story about Baby Ruth being named after Cleveland's daughter (it wasn't. The Babe turned them down, but they already had the candy bar in production and had to scramble. Ooops...

6. This Leslie Charteris character was played by George Sanders, Roger Moore, and Val Kilmer, among others.

The Saint

I suppose Simon Templar would fit as well, which is making me think maybe Paladin does qualify! I was thinking about this movie a while back, when Kilmer passed.
Yes, I actually own this (on VHS, natch) and remember being blown away when he slid the top of his cell phone over to reveal a secret keyboard. WTF is this Brave New World, Batman???

7. The poet and satirist who is credited with both “damning with faint praise” and “to err is human, to forgive, divine.”

Alexander Pope

One of my favourite poets. I actually had a teenage crush on him, hunchback, being dead for centuries and all. The heart wants what the heart wants...

8. The team name that Stan Musial, Roger Wehrli, and Albert Pujols all had in common.

Cardinals

9. The operatic lead singer of this heavy metal band came out as gay on MTV in 1998.

Judas Priest

Theme wise, Im guessing this has to be Rob Halford, although I wouldn't consider him operatic. I also thought this was way earlier than 1998, but maybe just because it was so obvious for years before that...

10. John Wayne, Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and Michael Anderson Jr. played the title offspring in this 1965 western.

Sons of Katie Elder

Another favourite (I love the scene between Martin and Martin (and I never really noticed the same last name until just now when I was typing it out, ha). I was thinking about this movie maybe a week ago in the middle of the night (what, doesn't everybody do that??) because I'd just read something about Bass Reeves, which made me think about Bass Elder. And I was trying like hell to remember who played the fourth son. Thanks for dropping the knowledge, because that name is totally unfamiliar to me and I would have never come up with it

You don't have a spot to answer the theme, but I'm assuming that we need to identify it for points, yeah? I forgot it was Monday so I'm just now seeing this and don't have the energy to go deeper than religious figures, but I'm thinking that your NYT crosswording it by starting off easier.

shaman. Kind of ruined it here, because I should have just used the info for cleric, since that's all most people are going to know about DnD, unless they play regularly. But I started from shaman, then wondered if they'd thrown that class in on one of the later versions. Turns out they did.

5. First name of the animated ursine who always wanted a “pic-a-nic basket!”

Yogi

6. This Leslie Charteris character was played by George Sanders, Roger Moore, and Val Kilmer, among others.

The Saint is what I was going for, but as several of you pointed out, Simon Templar would work for the theme as well. bonus point if you put both.

7. The poet and satirist who is credited with both “damning with faint praise” and “to err is human, to forgive, divine.”

Alexander Pope

8. The team name that Stan Musial, Roger Wehrli, and Albert Pujols all had in common.

(St. Louis) Cardinals. I was careful to pick a football Cardinal who only played for St. Louis, but you didn't have to have it.

9. The operatic lead singer of this heavy metal band came out as gay on MTV in 1998.

Judas Priest. And yeah, Earl, probably should have said "bombastic" or some such. Maybe flamboyant? And the date was a lookup for me, because I didn't remember it at all.
