Nonnas on Netflix

The reviews on this were mixed, but I liked it. Vince Vaughn plays against type as a 40-something guy who has been looking after his mother his entire adult life. She and his nonna (grandmother) gave him a love for Italian cooking, so when she dies, he decides to take the life insurance money and buy an abandoned Italian restaurant in Staten Island. He gets some genuine Italian grandmothers (including Susan Sarandon, Brenda Vaccaro, and Lorraine Bracco) to do the cooking from their own recipes. It's based on a true story (the real character appears in some of the dining scenes) and has Vaughn playing a sweet guy instead of his usual sarcastic one.

Mrs BiT and I watched this last weekend. We really enjoyed it. Not the typical Vince Vaugh fair. He showed some range, IMO.

I have been posting in different social media forums about my family - I've been going through pictures of my Italian grandmother (Marietta) and sharing some family details in advance of a Ferrante Family Reunion in August. As it stands now, we will have four generations of family at a cousin's house.

After I told stories of my great-grandmother (TLAF's grandmother), who shepherded six children - including Marietta - in steerage over Christmas in 1911 to get them to North Philadelphia in time for the new year, several classmates who had similar stories posted them.

That led to friends many people recommending Nonnas. I suspect I will like it very much

I suspect that will be an understatement.
