Puppy Watch

#1 Post by BackInTex » Tue May 13, 2025 12:03 pm

Scout, our 19 month old Australian Shepherd is with children. Her offical due date is Thursday, May 15 (63 days from "insemination", or from when we saw her and Koda "locked up").

Koda is my daughter's dog that lives in the Denver area. I was up there is February for a business meeting and rather than fly back, I rented a car and Koda and I road tripped home. He spent two months with us. Our daughter and her family came down in March for my mother-in-law's 90th birthday celebration. They stayed with us for 10 days, then took Koda back.

When I picked up Koda, Ruby, my son-in-law's parent's dog, was staying with them and she was in heat. Koda had no interest in her as she is a real B**ch, but without being with children. But when Koda got to our house, he was all over Scout, unsuccessfully, for 4-5 days. Then he stopped. We didn't think she was in heat, but then Koda should know better than us. However, I think it was more of some carry-over hormone senses from being around Ruby and then seeing Scout who wanted to play (but not in that way). Fast forward a month and Scout goes into heat (on schedule). Koda shows a little interest but has trouble figuring out which end was right (or maybe like some humans he likes ...well, let's not go there). Anyway, after a few days, my daughter and her family arrive. They have my 6 year-old and 2 year-old grand-daughters. The third day they were here, we were eathing lunch and looking out the window to the patio where Koda, Scout, and my two grand-daughters were. My son in law saw the two kids playing with the two dogs, but then quickly realized the 6-year old was trying to pull the dogs apart. Yep, they were stuck together. It was pretty funny. You might have had to have been there.

Anyway, here we are, 2 days from the official due date. Scout's temperature has dropped 1/2 a degree, she's not interested in things she was fanatical about a week ago (me getting ice out of the freezer, she always insists on a piece). We've never done the pupply thing. It will be.....fun?

Koda is a blue merle, Scout a black, brown and white tri-color. We will keep one of the puppies, my daughter will take one, and we'll sell the rest. Hopefully we'll break even. My wife purchased everything recommended in numerous YouTube videos for having and taking care of a litter of puppies off Amazon. I just don't know how dog's ever had puppies without that stuff.

Scout had six puppies. Mom and babies are doing well.

It didn't start out that way. Mrs BiT and I went to bed around midnight, then got up every hour to check on her. 1:30 I checked on her, everything was fine. 2:30 Mrs BiT checked, everything fine. 3:30 I walked out of the bedroom and immediatley heard puppy whimpering. I woke Mrs. BiT up and we walked into the office together. Scout was in her whelping box with a single puppy. But the whimpering sounded like more than one puppy. There was blood along the top of the whelping box on one side. There was about 12 inches of space between the whelping box and a credenza. In between was a fallen heating mat, folded up on the floor. It was moving! I reached into the fold and found a puppy. I put that puppy in the box with Scout and the other puppy. The whimpering lessened, but there seemed to be some coming from somewhere else. I looked behind the box, between it and the window (about 8 inches of room) and found a third puppy. Our guess is that Scout had stepped out of the box when she delivered the first two and they somehow made their way to the side of the box and she couldn't get to them.

About 4:00 she delivered #4. About 5:00, #5, then two hours later #6. We thought she might have one more in her, but 4 hours later we realized six was it.

1 - Black & White bi-color - Female
1 - Blue merle - Female
2 - Blue merle - Male
1 - Red & white bi-color - Male
1 - Red & white bi-color - Female

That is a nice mix of sexes and colors. The bi-colors may change to tri-colors over the next few weeks, we'll see.

The most common Aussie is a black, tan, white tri-color, like Scout. We are surprised none of the puppies were that (unless the one black & white develops some tan). I'll try to get a picture posted.

The black one can be seen if you look closely. She is 3rd from the left.
