Oscars Rule Change

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Fri Apr 25, 2025 8:42 am

The Oscars have announced a major rule change and added two new categories, the first additions since the Best Animated Film 25 years ago. Effective this year, no one will be allowed to vote in a category unless they have seen all the nominated films in that category. This won't be done on an honor system either. The Oscars have a private streaming channel for Academy members that registers which films (and when) any member watches. If a member sees a movie at a public forum like a film festival or premiere, they must document the details of their attendance.

The two new categories are Best Casting (essentially the best acting ensemble in a movie), which will be awarded next year. Other Awards ceremonies like the SAG awards already have this category. Also Best Stunt Work will become an Oscar category in 2028, for films released in 2027.

They need one for best CGI. Most CGI is distracting and obvious. Then maybe not, we shouldn't encourage it's use.
..what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms.
~~ Thomas Jefferson

War is where the government tells you who the bad guy is.
Revolution is when you decide that for yourself.

They've had a Best Visual Effects Oscar since 1939. (A movie called The Rains Came won, beating Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, among others.) As technology has changed, the types of effects have as well, so now it's almost exclusively CGI. The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, and The Longest Day won this Oscar. More recently, the original Star Wars, Alien, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. won. Dune Part Two was the winner this year. (The first half of Dune won in 2021.)
