Lyrically Speaking - 2/28/25

It's been kind of a weird season of LSWE this year. There was no short phrases game, no visual image game, Charlie Brown's Teacher didn't drop by to teach us another lesson... in fact, no Merry Men at all showed up to host a game. You know what else was odd about this LSWE run? None of the games contained more than 12 songs! That's mainly due to me making all of the Friday games theme games, which wasn't my intention when I started five weeks ago. Had I known, I would have flipped Thursday and Friday and had the decades game run for more songs. And..... well, the final Friday game is also a themed game. However, I can't very well have just a 12 song finale.... so this last game is going to be 16 songs long! That'll give you plenty of points to catch whoever it is you're chasing in the standings, while also giving your opponent more than enough chances to widen the gap even more.

So here we are.... sixteen songs with a common theme! And if you get the theme for this game, I'm awarding five points for it this time! I usually save the hard themes for last, but if you don't get this one, well, I just don't know what to say....

So, for the final time in 2025......... 1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 5 points for the theme!

1. Been away so long, I hardly knew the place
Gee, it's good to be back home
Leave it 'til tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey, disconnect the phone (2008)

2. I got a job waitin'
For my graduation
Fifty thou a year
Will buy a lotta beer (2009)

3. They say that you're a runaround lover
Though you say it isn't so
But if you put me down for another
I'll know, believe me, I'll know (2010)

4. We've been together since way back when
Sometimes I never wanna see you again (2011)

5. Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
And honey to shield my pride I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness (2012)

6. Someday, some good wind
May blow her back to me
Some night I may hear
Her like she used to be (2013)

7. Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot (2014)

8. There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday (2015)

9. And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's loving him with that body, I just know it (2016)

10. Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact, it's cold as hell (2017)

11. Oh, it's in color, your hair is brown
Your eyes are hazel and soft as clouds
I often kiss you when there's no one else around (2018)

12. Well, you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow
Kick off your shoes and you throw 'em on the floor (2019)

13. Well, if friends with their fancy persuasion
Don't admit that it's part of a scheme
But I can't help but have my suspicions
'Cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem (2020)

14. I'm too hot (hot damn)
Make a dragon wanna retire, man (2021)

15. Look over yonder
What do you see?
The sun is a-rising
Most definitely (2023)

16. I follow you around, but you can't see
You're too wrapped up in yourself to notice
So you choose to look the other way (2024)

OK, maybe I should give you a slight hint.

All of the songs above have appeared in an LSWE game before. And in the year listed, they all appeared in a game that also contained what other song in common?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist that, if you were the regular LS-meister, you would work into the game every year.

I'll go with One Night in Bangkok - Murray Head

Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist that, if you were the regular LS-meister, you would work into the game every year.

I have hosted five times (so far) and I don't think I have used it every time, but I will say House of the Rising Sun - Animals

OK, maybe I should give you a slight hint.

All of the songs above have appeared in an LSWE game before. And in the year listed, they all appeared in a game that also contained what other song in common?

No idea, how about Taxi - Harry Chapin?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist that, if you were the regular LS-meister, you would work into the game every year.

Boogie Till You Puke - Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band (with the Rootettes)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_UDAJ1gc7w

If only because of the review I read in the May 4, 1978 Rolling Stone (for Van Halen’s first album) that brought them to my attention. (It compared his voice on Boogie Till You Puke to an emphysema victim vomiting inside the Goodyear blimp.) When I played my eight track the first time in a dorm room, three different people came to the door, all with the same question: “What is that … noise?”

Here is some more info:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_Boy_Slim

Image Bonus: What's one of the side effects of playing the LSWE I should warn people about?

Here’s a pretty good list of side effects -

But it left out being addictively fun while feeling like an old fart. Many thanks!

The last game? Say it ain't so! I did miss the image game, but I know they have to be terribly time consuming to put together and you weren't really too jazzed about doing another LSWE. So I'm just happy that you took one for the team and put together an LSWE to be proud of!

And, thanks to multiple LS games, that's the only lines I know of this stupid song by this stupid band....

9. And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's loving him with that body, I just know it (2016)

Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield

And that point is still not moot. A week or so ago, I was randomly singing I've Done Everything for You and nobody would believe it was Rick Springfield. "you mean the guy that did Jessie's girl?" "yes, on the same fucking album, you philistines....

Her like she used to be (2013)
Valerie - Steve Winwood

7. Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot (2014)
You're So Vain - Carly Simon

8. There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday (2015)
King Of Pain - Police

9. And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's loving him with that body, I just know it (2016)
Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield (One of those songs that seems to snap many players back into Annie Bonus mode...)

10. Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact, it's cold as hell (2017)
Rocket Man - Elton John

11. Oh, it's in color, your hair is brown
Your eyes are hazel and soft as clouds
I often kiss you when there's no one else around (2018)
Turning Japanese - The Vapors

12. Well, you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow
Kick off your shoes and you throw 'em on the floor (2019)
Louisana Saturday Night - Mel McDaniel et, al. (Not only used in LSWE, but in a Dusty Vinyl Archive post on my blog a few years ago. Earworm courtesy of Mecca Radio....)

13. Well, if friends with their fancy persuasion
Don't admit that it's part of a scheme
But I can't help but have my suspicions

You're too wrapped up in yourself to notice
So you choose to look the other way (2024)
Open Your Heart - Madonna

Theme????????

All of the songs above have appeared in an LSWE game before. And in the year listed, they all appeared in a game that also contained what other song in common?

One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head (I can excuse part time players for not knowing this, but if you're an LSWE vet, this should've been a gimme. And depending on how you look at it, that makes this the first LSWE it didn't actually appear in!)

Image Bonus: What's one of the side effects of playing the LSWE I should warn people about?

Even though melly pulled a Weasel and put her best image second, it was still easily the standout of the bunch! It took me a minute to realize why the worm was taking a shower, but when it finally hit me I got a good laugh. So the final IBB of 2025 goes to her!

JJC Points:

Krox gets 2 JJC points for being lost and confused, and summoning the Doctor one last time...

Panic gets 3 JJC points for.... well, we won't judge what LSWE makes him do....

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for an invisible image of an egg (Had he tracked down the ES-altered image of Blue Boy from Dragnet, it woulda been supermax AND IBB....)

BiT gets 3 JJC points for Frankie Valley and the Four Earworms...

frank gets a supermax for missing the Beatles song (I'm guessing the years initially threw him off and he never got back to it), and for tracking down Speedo Man. If playing the LSWE gave you his good looks, the whole Bored would be playing...

ear gets 2 JJC points for one ugly looking earworm...

jarnon gets a JJC point for walking a dog, or girl watching....

Weasel gets a supermax for Andrew in Drag (I loved how so many of the Kroxes made me go, "oh yeah, that's exactly which song they'd have picked!), and for the ever snowballing parade of thanks...

elwood gets a supermax for bitching in the office about JJC points and Kroxes (and probably Kitty Sandwich)....

mikeh gets 3 JJC points for Boogie-ing and puking, and side effects of being a redneck...

Sprots gets 2 JJC points because I've run out of patience...

Search gets 2 JJC points for physician heal thyself...

melly gets 3 JJC points for TLAF doing Uptown Funk, and earworms in the shower...

mrk gets 3 JJC points for beer ears...

Earl gets 3 JJC points for never forgetting Shania Twain, nobody believing Rick Springfield sang a Sammy Slacks song, and not needing the hint, allegedly....

And per longstanding LSWE tradition (dating back, like, a decade or so... which may as well have been yesterday), everyone who thanked me in some way for running the LSWE this year got a bonus 3 points (aka, the Weasel Bonus) in addition to any other points they earned in the game.
