Lyrically Speaking - 2/27/25
This is the moment where the teacher says there's going to be a test on the subject, and the entire class moans in unison because nobody was paying attention to the lesson. Yes, we've reached the portion of our decades LSWE game where we enter the current millennium. However, rather than choose a single year, I decided to just pick 12 of my absolute favorite songs of the past quarter of a century to present in this game. Yes, there is still good music out there.... not so much in the 2020's in my opinion, but the era from the late 00's to about 2015 was red hot with great stuff. I know, your mileage may vary.... but here's a chance to see the fun and articulate lyrics you've missed from years beginning with a two!
1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....
1. I was broken from a young age
Taking my sulking to the masses
Writing my poems for the few
That look at me, took to me, shook to me, feeling me
2. You got a new horizon, it's ephemeral style
A melancholy town where we never smile
And all I wanna hear is the message beep
My dreams, they got a kissing
'Cause I don't get sleep, no
3. Lights go down, it's dark
The jungle is your head, can't rule your heart
A feeling's so much stronger than a thought
Your eyes are wide and though your soul, it can't be bought
Your mind can wander
4. Dirty babe (uh-huh)
You see these shackles baby, I'm your slave (uh-huh)
I'll let you whip me, if I misbehave (uh-huh)
5. The city's cold and empty (oh)
No one's around to judge me (oh)
I can't see clearly when you're gone
6. I never miss a beat
I'm lightnin' on my feet
And that's what they don't see, mm-mm
That's what they don't see, mm-mm
7. Like the legend of the phoenix, huh
All ends with beginnings
What keeps the planet spinning, ah
The force from the beginning
8. I'll be your ghost, your game, your stadium
I'll be your 50 thousand clapping like one
And I feel alright, and I feel alright
'Cause I worked it out, yeah, I worked it out
9. I had a summer lover down in New Orleans
Kept him warm in the winter, left him frozen in the spring
My, my, how the seasons go by
10. The waves keep on crashing on me for some reason
But your love keeps on coming like a thunderbolt
Come here a little closer
'Cause I wanna see you, baby, real close up
11. I hopped off the plane at LAX
With a dream and my cardigan
Welcome to the land of fame excess (woah)
Am I gonna fit in?
12. Whatcha gon' do with all that ass
All that ass inside them jeans?
Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist from anytime since the year 2000.
Image Bonus: She me something you might've seen on TV in the past 25 years.

Feel Good Inc - Gorillaz
I just heard this song on an IG reel yesterday for the first time in forever. It's so much better without the creepy video...
Sexyback - Justin Timberlake
"Summer of 2006" means two things, my dad passing and this song. I think I've shared this before, but after he passed I couldn't sleep for several months and just sat in a chair all night with music videos playing on tv. I swear every third video on Vh1 was this song. Hey, at least it got me back into current music, which lasted until a couple years ago...
5. The city's cold and empty (oh)
No one's around to judge me (oh)
I can't see clearly when you're gone.
6. I never miss a beat
I'm lightnin' on my feet
And that's what they don't see, mm-mm
That's what they don't see, mm-mm
Shake if Off - Taylor Swift
Yeah, I like T Swizzle, so sue me! But not to the point of being a Swiftie, making bracelets or rooting for the fucking Chiefs (fly, Eagles, fly!) Fanny Fun Fact: Kendrick dropped John Stockton's name in Not Like Us at the Super Bowl and Stockton was deluged with texts from friends (who apparently have never heard that song). But here's the fun: Stockton's grandfather won the equivalent of the Super Bowl with the Frankford Yellow Jackets, who later became the, you guessed it, Philadelphia Eagles!
7. Like the legend of the phoenix, huh
All ends with beginnings
What keeps the planet spinning, ah
The force from the beginning
Get Lucky - Daft Punk
I hate this song so much, just the fact that know it speaks to the pervasiveness of Pharell at that time...
8. I'll be your ghost, your game, your stadium
I'll be your 50 thousand clapping like one
And I feel alright, and I feel alright
'Cause I worked it out, yeah, I worked it out
Love Runs Out - OneRepublic
Now this is more like it! The hometown boys played the first show of the new amphitheater in town last summer. Not that my broke ass was able to go...
9. I had a summer lover down in New Orleans
Kept him warm in the winter, left him frozen in the spring
My, my, how the seasons go by
Exes and Ohs - Elle King
Fanny Fun Fac....yeah, you already know....
10. The waves keep on crashing on me for some reason
But your love keeps on coming like a thunderbolt
Come here a little closer
'Cause I wanna see you, baby, real close up
Hella Good - No Doubt
Not my fave by a long shot, but you do you....
11. I hopped off the plane at LAX
With a dream and my cardigan
Welcome to the land of fame excess (woah)
Am I gonna fit in?
Party in the USA - Miley Cyrus
Written (along with I Kissed a Girl) by Kesha!
12. Whatcha gon' do with all that ass
All that ass inside them jeans?
My Humps - Black Eyed Peas
Although I really like BEP, Alanis did it better....
Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist from anytime since the year 2000.
Welcome to the Black Parade - My Chemical Romance
I already told the story of how I got back into current music. I discovered Fuse pretty quickly, which was big into pop/punk, emo and hip hop (which got me into Lil Wayne, Eminem, FOB, etc.) In September of that year, this song came out and struck such a chord with me about death and carrying on. The entire Black Parade album is a Holy Grail for me.
Bonus: She me something you might've seen on TV in the past 25 years.

You expected something else? Ok, fine...
1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....
1. I was broken from a young age
Taking my sulking to the masses
Writing my poems for the few
That look at me, took to me, shook to me, feeling me
Believer - Imagine Dragons
Not that much of a fan, but this one and Thunder were killer!
2. You got a new horizon, it's ephemeral style
A melancholy town where we never smile
And all I wanna hear is the message beep
My dreams, they got a kissing
'Cause I don't get sleep, no

Re: Lyrically Speaking - 2/27/25
1. I was broken from a young age
Taking my sulking to the masses
Writing my poems for the few
That look at me, took to me, shook to me, feeling me
Believer - Imagine Dragons (This would be my likely choice for best song of the 2000's so far. And I don't think there's another act, solo or band, from this century that has more songs I'd consider faves...)
2. You got a new horizon, it's ephemeral style
A melancholy town where we never smile
And all I wanna hear is the message beep
My dreams, they got a kissing
'Cause I don't get sleep, no
Feel Good, Inc. - Gorillaz (One of the most killer bass lines in any song ever. And one of the few songs with an inserted rap where the rap might actually be better than the song itself! Only other one I can think of offhand is the remade version of Lady Marmalade...)
3. Lights go down, it's dark
The jungle is your head, can't rule your heart
A feeling's so much stronger than a thought
Your eyes are wide and though your soul, it can't be bought
Your mind can wander
Vertigo - U2 (It took U2 twenty fucking years to make a song I actually love. See, not everything musical in the 80's was good....)
4. Dirty babe (uh-huh)
You see these shackles baby, I'm your slave (uh-huh)
I'll let you whip me, if I misbehave (uh-huh)
Sexyback - Justin Timberlake
5. The city's cold and empty (oh)
No one's around to judge me (oh)
I can't see clearly when you're gone
Blinding Lights - The Weeknd (Had the honor of being the final Boney #1, sniff....)
6. I never miss a beat
I'm lightnin' on my feet
And that's what they don't see, mm-mm
That's what they don't see, mm-mm
Shake It Off - Taylor Swift (Taylor's lone good era coincided with the 2012-14 run of killer music I was really digging at the time, and this is the one and ONLY of her songs I will unabashedly admit my love for. I air drum those three beats every time they're played in this song...)
7. Like the legend of the phoenix, huh
All ends with beginnings
What keeps the planet spinning, ah
The force from the beginning
Get Lucky - Daft Punk (Which will always be associated with Blurred Lines by me for many obvious reasons.... and though I love that song as well, I left it out to limit the amount of Pharrell in this game)
8. I'll be your ghost, your game, your stadium
I'll be your 50 thousand clapping like one
And I feel alright, and I feel alright
'Cause I worked it out, yeah, I worked it out
Love Runs Out - OneRepublic (This song got played ad nauseum on my radio station in 2014 and at Mecca [and still does], yet it seems like even most current music listeners don't know it. Hands down their best....)
9. I had a summer lover down in New Orleans
Kept him warm in the winter, left him frozen in the spring
My, my, how the seasons go by
Ex's and Oh's - Elle King (This seemed to be the one song that even some of the classic rockers could pick out of the game....)
10. The waves keep on crashing on me for some reason
But your love keeps on coming like a thunderbolt
Come here a little closer
'Cause I wanna see you, baby, real close up
Hella Good - No Doubt
11. I hopped off the plane at LAX
With a dream and my cardigan
Welcome to the land of fame excess (woah)
Am I gonna fit in?
Party in the USA - Miley Cyrus (Another one I unashamedly love. Everything she's done since Wrecking Ball, and they play the shit out of her current music at Mecca, is utterly dreadful....)
12. Whatcha gon' do with all that ass
All that ass inside them jeans?
My Humps - Black Eyed Peas (I'd forgotten all about the Alanis version, which was only good in a mocking kind of way. If I hated the original, I'd probably love it [a la the Tori Amos and Paul Anka versions of Smells Like Teen Spirit], but that's obviously not the case..... far from it.)
Image Bonus: She me something you might've seen on TV in the past 25 years.
I quit watching TV in the 90's, and since I've been on my own in 2009, I've really stopped. I had the cable yanked in 2019 and haven't even turned it on since. Anyway.... the mashup of Sesame Street and Game of Thrones is interesting. Explain that one to the kiddies, Elmo. IBB for melly!

Re: Lyrically Speaking - 2/27/25
JJC Points:
mikeh gets 2 JJC points for good Ed Sullivan songs, and watching too much politics...
Weasel gets a JJC points for Schitt's Creek, which I only know because of Mecca and the licensed merch. We sold a SC mug in my department for a couple years...
ear gets a JJC point for taking a zero...
Panc gets a JJC point for the extra e...
Krox gets 2 JJC points for knowing two songs (one with a Weird Al connection, surprise), and for his Billie Eilish and Doctor Who fetish (I hear Billie's name dropped on the Mecca Radio shows all the time, and I still don't know who the fuck she is. I'm sure they play her songs, but they obviously aren't ones I've liked enough to look up at home)...
frank gets 3 JJC points for Gordon, and not going with more shameless self promotion...
Vandal gets 2 JJC points for, what I'm pretty sure, was the last Super Bowl moment I ever watched...
jarnon gets a JJC point for noting the absence of Charlie Brown's Teacher (I didn't use her last year either... I think the usable subjects have been exhausted already)....
BiT gets 3 JJC points for a Fall Out Boy fetish, and the Iwo Jima of my generation...
Search gets 3 JJC points for Bored legend * Van * singing well into his 90's...
melly gets 2 JJC points for dragons and incest on The Street...
elwood gets 2 JJC points for proving what a crapshoot winning the World Series is (had it been their 2004 and 2015 teams, nobody would have batted an eye)...
Hottie gets a JJC point for radio station changes (I think we've all been through that)...
Sprots gets 2 JJC points for directing me to a website that wanted me to subscribe to it, so I signed her up....
Earl gets 3 JJC points for dissing some of my faves, and including Spilly... even though she pulled a Weasel and screwed herself out of a possible IBB by sticking with her feline fetish....

I didn't even think of it! Besides, I'm not the only one on here who could have gone that route.littlebeast13 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 8:35 amJJC Points:
