Lyrically Speaking - 2/25/25

For our final Tuesday game of the year, it's time to celebrate the really big bands... the ones that weren't just one or two primadonnas and a bunch of session players. All of the songs below are by groups that had six or more members. There's so many musicians involved in this game, the fire marshal just might close down the thread...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Midnight creeps so slowly into hearts of men
Who need more than they get
Daylight deals a bad hand to a woman
Who has laid too many bets

2. She's comin' in, 12:30 flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation

3. She was pure like snowflakes
No one could ever stain

4. LA, Hollywood, and the Sunset Strip
Is something everyone should see
Neon lights and the pretty, pretty girls
All dressed so scantily

5. Funny faces
Full of love and laughter
Funny places
Summer nights and streetcars

6. I'll walk down the mall, stand over by the wall
Where I can see it all, find out who you call
Lead you to the supermarket checkout
Some specials and rat food, get lost in the crowd

7. Our mum she's so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down and a mess is not allowed

8. I told you
That we could fly
'Cause we all have wings
But some of us don't know why

9. Young man, are you listening to me? I said
Young man, what do you want to be?

10. Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it ever come down to do or die?
You've got to rise above the rest

11. Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale
Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale

12. We can't go on
Pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist by a band with six or more members.

Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale

Jump Jive and Wail -- I'm gonna put Brian Setzer Orchestra because I want to let everybody know who doesn't that Brian Setzer has announced that he can't play guitar any more. Something about an auto-immune disease. Says he feels like he's wearing mittens when he tries to play. So sad.

12. We can't go on
Pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change

We are the World -- USA for Africa

1. Midnight creeps so slowly into hearts of men
Who need more than they get
Daylight deals a bad hand to a woman
Who has laid too many bets

Boogie Wonderland - EWF

and BOOM! goes the krox dynamite right out of the gate. That's okay, I've got a better one (fingers crossed...)

2. She's comin' in, 12:30 flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation

Africa - Toto

3. She was pure like snowflakes
No one could ever stain

Centerfold - J. Geils Band

Nope, wasn't this one...

4. LA, Hollywood, and the Sunset Strip
Is something everyone should see
Neon lights and the pretty, pretty girls
All dressed so scantily

The Heart of Rock and Roll - Huey Lewis and the News

5. Funny faces
Full of love and laughter
Funny places
Summer nights and streetcars

Old Days - Chicago

6. I'll walk down the mall, stand over by the wall
Where I can see it all, find out who you call
Lead you to the supermarket checkout
Some specials and rat food, get lost in the crowd

One Way or Another - Blondie

7. Our mum she's so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down and a mess is not allowed

Our House - Madness

8. I told you
That we could fly
'Cause we all have wings
But some of us don't know why

Never Tear Us Apart - INXS

9. Young man, are you listening to me? I said
Young man, what do you want to be?

YMCA - Village People

At first I thought this had to be something else, because VP only had 5 people, but it couldn't be anything else so I had to count off the characters on my fingers. Okay, I always forget about the sailor since the CHiPs guy dressed up as an admiral (?) for In the Navy. Why can I remember so much 70s minutiae when I'd be hard pressed to tell you what I did two days ago?????

10. Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it ever come down to do or die?
You've got to rise above the rest

Damn this is familiar, but I just can't pull it...

11. Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale
Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale

Jump, Jive and Wail - I would say Louis Prima, but I suppose you're looking for BSO

I could have gotten precient points because when I asked what you were going to do after using the Big Three from the Cats so early in the game I was going to add I guess go for the BSO, but I edited myself for brevity for one of the few times in my life....shame on me

12. We can't go on
Pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change

Is that this dumb We are the World song? That doesn't count because it wasn't a real band....

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist by a band with six or more members.

They Call Me the Breeze - Lynyrd Skynyrd by way of JJ Cale

Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
Africa - Toto

3. She was pure like snowflakes
No one could ever stain
Centerfold - J Geils Band (I always want to use "Come Back" for them, but probably nobody other than Earl would recoginze it...)

4. LA, Hollywood, and the Sunset Strip
Is something everyone should see
Neon lights and the pretty, pretty girls
All dressed so scantily
Heart of Rock and Roll - Huey Lewis & The News

5. Funny faces
Full of love and laughter
Funny places
Summer nights and streetcars
Old Days - Chicago

6. I'll walk down the mall, stand over by the wall
Where I can see it all, find out who you call
Lead you to the supermarket checkout
Some specials and rat food, get lost in the crowd
One Way Or Another - Blondie

7. Our mum she's so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down and a mess is not allowed
Our House - Madness (I coulda used any number of great Madness songs that aren't "Our House" here, but probably only Krox would have gotten it....)

8. I told you
That we could fly
'Cause we all have wings
But some of us don't know why
Never Tear Us Apart - INXS

9. Young man, are you listening to me? I said
Young man, what do you want to be?
YMCA - The Village People

10. Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess?
Or has it ever come down to do or die?
You've got to rise above the rest
The Impression That I Get - Mighty Mighty Bosstones

11. Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale
Papa's in the icebox lookin' for a can of ale
Jump Jive and Wail - Brian Setzer Orchestra (And some old guy. Yes, we squeezed Brian Setzer for all he was worth in the 2025 LSWE, though it's sad to hear his playing days are over. Also, the second song to appear this year with "icebox" in the lyrics. I shoulda forced "Having a Party" into one of the last couple games...)

12. We can't go on
Pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We Are The World - USA For Africa

Image Bonus: The assembled multitude...

Another good set of images for this game! It was a squeaker between Vandal and BiT, but I ultimately sided with the wildebeests for the IBB. That's a fascinating picture!

JJC Points:

Weasel gets 2 JJC points for Jackie Onassis (for once, I actually did listen to the song and kinda liked it), and for once again putting the worst image first....

Krox gets a JJC point for some Mongols who didn't want to show up as an image...

BiT gets 2 JJC points for rush hour...

frank gets a JJC point for a song I definitely wasn't going to listen to...

jarnon gets 2 JJC points for using USA for Africa as the Image Bonus, but missing the song in the game...

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for yellow snow and shadowy camels (The shadows remind me of those "secret messages" you could write on rubber bands... something I learned off of Mr. Wizard's World back in the day)....

mrk gets a JJC point for my number...

mikeh gets 2 JJC points for that unsettling synchronized AI dancing...

Search gets 2 JJC points for six so-called superheroes standing around doing nothing while the city's been completely destroyed...

melly gets 2 JJC points for Santa Claus leading his people...

elwood gets 2 JJC points for sneaking that Image Bonus into the regular game, and for the hell of it, I accepted 10,000 Maniacs even though I'm pretty sure it's not right...

ear gets 2 JJC points for a bunch of brats...

Sprots gets 3 JJC points for more incredibly lame excuses, and leading me to some religious site so I can find Jesus...

Earl gets 3 JJC points for the ChiPs guy, dissing USAfA, and for six cats getting simultaneous prostate exams...
