Lyrically Speaking - 2/20/25

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 20, 2025 4:43 am

So, after last week's thrilling 80's game where we took a look at the songs from the year 1989, we celebrate the 90's today with the randomly chosen year of........ 1990. Yeah, despite them now being separated by the ten foot high barbed wire fence of decades nostalgia, the years 1989 and 1990 were actually consecutive on the calendar and the music was pretty much the same, and a number of songs could have gone into either game. Oh well, have at it with some of the biggest hits (or just songs I like) from the year 1990...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave
White Lightnin' bound to drive you wild

2. See
It was just too soon to tell
And looking for some parallel
Can be an endless game

3. Swingin' in there 'cause she wanted me to feed her
So I mixed up the batter and she licked the beater

4. 'Cause love cuts a million ways
Shakes the devil when he misbehaves
I ain't nobody's fool
Come on, shake it up
Whatever I do, rock!

5. You look at me so funny
Love bite got you acting, oh, so strange
You got too many bees in your honey
Am I just another word in your page, yeah, yeah?

6. Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer

7. Fresh new kicks and pants
You got it like that
Now you know you wanna dance

8. Fly the great big sky
See the great big sea
Kick through continents
Busting boundaries

9. I don't need to fall at your feet
Just 'cause you cut me to the bone
And I won't miss the way that you kiss me
We were never carved in stone

10. The chills that you spill
Up my back keep me filled
With satisfaction when we're done
Satisfaction of what's to come

11. But sometimes I get ridiculous
I'll eat up all your crackers and your licorice
Hey yo fat girl, c'mere - are ya ticklish?

12. Forget about that, let's go into the story
About a girl named blah-blah-blah that adored me

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or a hit sometime around 1990.

Spoiler
1990 must have been during the height of my Country phase. I got nuthin' (first pass)

1. Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave
White Lightnin' bound to drive you wild

Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
This did not ring a bell on my first pass. Nothing did. But thinking about a Krox, this was all I could think, see comments below. Then on my second pass I got it. Now I have to find another Krox.
"Has to be near 1990 because every band we got demo tapes from for our wedding, except the band we chose, had that on their tape. My wife hated the song because it was way overplayed.
During the reception the band we chose played it.
Wedding date 3/9/91"

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or a hit sometime around 1990.

Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
Leaving Here A Better Man - Clint Black

12. Forget about that, let's go into the story
About a girl named blah-blah-blah that adored me

Just a Friend - Biz Markie

RIP to both of the Biz boyz. Also DOUBLE PRESCIENT KROX POINTS!111111

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or a hit sometime around 1990.

The More Things Change - Cinderella

Until you give Cinderella the love they are due, I'm going to have to keep doing this..

Image Bonus: Show me something you might've seen on TV in the 90's.

Best TV series of all time, never mind the 90s! If you've ever seen the musical episode you know this number is high camp and comic relief rarely shown in the series

1. Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave
White Lightnin' bound to drive you wild
Black Velvet - Alannah Myles (I've mentioned before that this was one of my Dad's favorite songs, and one of the holy trinity along with "Spirit in the Sky" and "Draggin' the Line" that he'd always turn up if they came on the car radio. Until the day I slapped his hand for turning up Adele.... there are no good Adele songs)

2. See
It was just too soon to tell
And looking for some parallel
Can be an endless game
No Myth - Michael Penn (This one somehow slipped by everyone, maybe because of the snippet I chose. Definitely not an obscurity, and a song I've used a lot in LSWE....)

3. Swingin' in there 'cause she wanted me to feed her
So I mixed up the batter and she licked the beater
Cherry Pie - Warrant

4. 'Cause love cuts a million ways
Shakes the devil when he misbehaves
I ain't nobody's fool
Come on, shake it up
Whatever I do, rock!
Cradle of Love - Billy Idol (Until about 15-20 years ago, I never knew Billy was still making hits after "Mony Mony.")

5. You look at me so funny
Love bite got you acting, oh, so strange
You got too many bees in your honey
Am I just another word in your page, yeah, yeah?
Unskinny Bop - Poison

6. Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
I'll make you a believer
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode (One of the few songs of theirs I absolutely hate...)

7. Fresh new kicks and pants
You got it like that
Now you know you wanna dance
U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer

8. Fly the great big sky
See the great big sea
Kick through continents
Busting boundaries
Roam - B-52's

9. I don't need to fall at your feet
Just 'cause you cut me to the bone
And I won't miss the way that you kiss me
We were never carved in stone
King of Wishful Thinking - Go West

10. The chills that you spill
Up my back keep me filled
With satisfaction when we're done
Satisfaction of what's to come
Groove Is In The Heart - Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-lite (Proof that the two decade rule of trends and fashion was alive and well)

11. But sometimes I get ridiculous
I'll eat up all your crackers and your licorice
Hey yo fat girl, c'mere - are ya ticklish?
The Humpty Dance - Digital Underground (Another one of those songs that, if you play LSWE every year, you have no excuse to ever miss....)

12. Forget about that, let's go into the story
About a girl named blah-blah-blah that adored me
Just A Friend - Biz Markie (Beavis: "Hey, it's the dude on the dollar!")

Image Bonus: Show me something you might've seen on TV in the 90's.

Speaking of..... Beavis and Butthead got elwood an easy IBB. One of the few things worth watching on the tube in the 1990's. Heh heh, I said "tube!" Heh heh...

JJC Points:

ear gets 3 JJC points for showing up to class unprepared...

Weasel gets 2 JJC points for Celebrity Deathmatch, which I never did watch, but I'd have probably liked it...

BiT gets 3 JJC points for wedding memories and the stupidest police chase of all time (shoutout to the Knicks and Rockets)....

frank gets 2 JJC points for copying off BiT's paper...

Krox gets 3 JJC points for his Debbie Gibson and Dr. Who fetish (Did she ever play the doctor?)

mikeh gets 2 JJC points for Aaron Burr...

mrk gets 2 JJC points for..... whatever that show was (I've actually heard of the title before, but that's is)...

elwood gets a supermax because yesterday's game sucked...

Sprots gets 2 JJC points because she can't even get the title of the Billy Joel song right, and Johnny's SECOND TO LAST show ever....

Search gets a JJC point for reminding me of one of the more unusual Mecca earworms I picked up over the last quarter of a century...

And yes, I've used that in an LSWE game before....

melly gets a JJC point for chew toys...

Vandal gets a JJC point for the light at the end of the tunnel...

Earl gets 2 JJC points for bad OHW quizzes, and because when I looked up her image to see what show that was, it was literally the last thing I was expecting....

The first game all year with fewer than 15 players. And I do hope all is well with Panic, I don't know if he's ever missed a game in the years he's played....

mrk 21+2
elwood 7+5+5

Oh yeah -- we didn't START the fire. I was close. Give me a break on that and on Johnny, it was more than 30 years ago.
