Lyrically Speaking - 2/13/25

Our random year from my favorite all time decade (you better know what that is) takes us to its final year when, ironically, I started falling out of love with what was playing on the radio.... 1989! In November of the year prior, the big Top 40 station I had listened to for four years (hey, that's a long time when you're a kid!!!) suddenly decided to change over to an oldies station... and for whatever reason, despite it playing the SAME MUSIC, I never really did embrace the other one. Eh, Nirvana was about to come along anyway and really ruin my love for current music anyway, which allowed me to discover the amazing songs of the 70's during the 90's.

Huh? What was I doing here again? Oh.... yeah. These songs were all hits at some point in 1989.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. I don't know why I did the things I did
I don't know why I said the things I said
Pride's like a knife, it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes

2. So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength
A beautiful face without a name for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain

3. I'm in love with you, girl, 'cause you're on my mind
You're the one I think about most every time

4. Workin' like a dog
For the boss man (whoa)
Workin' for the company (whoa, yeah)

5. People say I should forget
New friend tomorrow
Don't get upset
People say she's doing fine
Mutual friends I see sometime

6. My grandma and your grandma
Sitting by the fire
My grandma says to your grandma
"i'm gonna set your flag on fire"

7. Come on, girls
Do you believe in love?
'Cause I got something to say about it
And it goes something like this

8. So hold me close better hang on tight
Buckle up, baby, it's a bumpy ride
We're two kids hitching down the road of life
Our world, our fight

9. I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears

10. All alone tonight I'm calling out your name
Somewhere deep inside, this part of you remains
Images of love, take me back in time

11. There's a healing in those guitars
And a spirit in the song
No matter what condition your rhythm is in
The message goes on and on

12. Heaven, is in the palm of my hand
And it's waiting here for you
What am I supposed to do

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was a hit or released sometime around 1989.

Image Bonus: Show me something you might have seen on TV in the 80's.

1. I don't know why I did the things I did
I don't know why I said the things I said
Pride's like a knife, it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes

If I Could Turn Back Time -- Cher

2. So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength
A beautiful face without a name for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain

Wind Beneath my Wings -- Bette Midler. Love Bette, love the song, hated the combination of the two. Give me Gary Morris any time.

3. I'm in love with you, girl, 'cause you're on my mind
You're the one I think about most every time

Girl, You know it's true

4. Workin' like a dog
For the boss man (whoa)
Workin' for the company (whoa, yeah)

Love in an Elevator -- Aerosmith. Hey, maybe I know more of these than I think.

5. People say I should forget
New friend tomorrow
Don't get upset
People say she's doing fine
Mutual friends I see sometime

6. My grandma and your grandma
Sitting by the fire
My grandma says to your grandma
"i'm gonna set your flag on fire"

I think this is Iko Iko, not I want Candy by Bow Wow Wow, which I always get it confused with. No clue on the artist

7. Come on, girls
Do you believe in love?
'Cause I got something to say about it
And it goes something like this

Express Yourself -- Madonna

8. So hold me close better hang on tight
Buckle up, baby, it's a bumpy ride
We're two kids hitching down the road of life
Our world, our fight

9. I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears

The Living Years -- Mike and the Mechanics

10. All alone tonight I'm calling out your name
Somewhere deep inside, this part of you remains
Images of love, take me back in time

And a spirit in the song
No matter what condition your rhythm is in
The message goes on and on

12. Heaven, is in the palm of my hand
And it's waiting here for you

Well, it's not She-Bop, we already had that one. It's not turning Japanese. So dunno.

Two out of the last 8. Pretty good, huh? :)

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was a hit or released sometime around 1989.

The year I got married, so I'll go with a safe one: I'll Still be Loving You -- Restless Heart

Image Bonus: Show me something you might have seen on TV in the 80's.

So many choices.

If I Could Turn Back Time - Cher

2. So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength
A beautiful face without a name for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain

Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler

Although I think some country guy named Gary did it first, don't know which one was 1989. Oh, I think it was Gary Morris

3. I'm in love with you, girl, 'cause you're on my mind
You're the one I think about most every time

4. Workin' like a dog
For the boss man (whoa)
Workin' for the company (whoa, yeah)

Love in an Elevator - Aerosmith

5. People say I should forget
New friend tomorrow
Don't get upset
People say she's doing fine
Mutual friends I see sometime

Good Thing - FYC

I meant to say a couple days ago when you used them that I was a party of one that liked this better than Drives Me Crazy, but I don't think I did. Dammit, no prescient points for me...

6. My grandma and your grandma
Sitting by the fire
My grandma says to your grandma
"i'm gonna set your flag on fire"

Iko Iko - Cyndi Lauper

I like this version much better than the original, which is good because I can't remember that chick's name

7. Come on, girls
Do you believe in love?
'Cause I got something to say about it
And it goes something like this

Express Yourself - Madonna

Now this is funny: I just looked up this song last night because for some reason I had Born This Way stuck in my head and could not remember which Madonna song it ripped off. I would have gotten it anyway. but still...

8. So hold me close better hang on tight
Buckle up, baby, it's a bumpy ride
We're two kids hitching down the road of life
Our world, our fight

Born to Be My Baby - Bon Jovi

Dammit al to hell! Ever since I read what year it was, I've been trying to decide which song off of New Jersey I was going to krox. You did this on purpose! (For the record, it was going to be I'll Be There for You)

9. I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears

10. All alone tonight I'm calling out your name
Somewhere deep inside, this part of you remains
Images of love, take me back in time

WTF man? If there was ever a game I should ace it would be the apex of hair metal and I'm shooting blanks left and right...

11. There's a healing in those guitars
And a spirit in the song
No matter what condition your rhythm is in
The message goes on and on

And it's three in a row, FFS! Although this one sounds familiar, I can't place it, I'm getting a 70s vibe on it for some reason....

12. Heaven, is in the palm of my hand
And it's waiting here for you
What am I supposed to do

Close Your Eyes Forever - Lita and Ozzy

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was a hit or released sometime around 1989.

Gypsy Road - Cinderella

aka Bon Jovi Lite

Image Bonus: Show me something you might have seen on TV in the 80's.

It's not the cutest or the funniest one they did, but the Beta Max indicator alone should get me IBB. Right?? Right????

1. I don't know why I did the things I did
I don't know why I said the things I said

If I Could Turn Back Time - Cher

2. So I was the one with all the glory
While you were the one with all the strength
A beautiful face without a name for so long
A beautiful smile to hide the pain
Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler and some old guy (My introduction to Bette was when she covered Beast of Burden with Mick Jagger a few years before this one. MTV played that thing to death...)

3. I'm in love with you, girl, 'cause you're on my mind
You're the one I think about most every time
Girl You Know It's True - Milli Vanilli (I intentionally used their Girl song to throw out an Annie Bonus bone, and nobody took it. Mainly because most of you missed it....)

4. Workin' like a dog
For the boss man (whoa)
Workin' for the company (whoa, yeah)
Love in an Elevator - Aerosmith

5. People say I should forget
New friend tomorrow
Don't get upset
People say she's doing fine
Mutual friends I see sometime
Good Thing - Fine Young Cannibals (I'm in Earl's club of two. She Drives Me Crazy isn't even a good song...)

6. My grandma and your grandma
Sitting by the fire
My grandma says to your grandma
"i'm gonna set your flag on fire"
Iko Iko - The Belle Stars (And so many others....)

7. Come on, girls
Do you believe in love?
'Cause I got something to say about it
And it goes something like this
Express Yourself - Madonna

8. So hold me close better hang on tight
Buckle up, baby, it's a bumpy ride

Our world, our fight
Born To Be My Baby - Bon Jovi

9. I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
The Living Years - Mike + the Mechanics

10. All alone tonight I'm calling out your name
Somewhere deep inside, this part of you remains
Images of love, take me back in time
Where Are You Now - Synch/Jimmy Harnen (I threw this one in knowing beforehand nobody would get it. I'm not going to go on a screed, other than to say this is one of the most criminally forgotten Top 10 hits EVER. I have never heard this song outside of my enjoyment of it on YouTube after it popped into my mind out of nowhere about a decade ago. Feel free to ignore my blog writeup of this one from 2016...)

11. There's a healing in those guitars
And a spirit in the song
No matter what condition your rhythm is in
The message goes on and on
The Doctor - Doobie Brothers (Another song I don't think anyone got, but come on! China Grove Part 2: Eletcric Boogaloo was fucking awesome! Oh, I also wrote this one up in 2016...)

12. Heaven, is in the palm of my hand
And it's waiting here for you
What am I supposed to do
Close My Eyes Forever - Ozzy Osbourne and Lita Ford

Image Bonus: Show me something you might have seen on TV in the 80's.

mikehardware hit a nostalgic chord with JEM!!!! My sisters thought she was truly outrageous during the 80's, and I even still have one of their old Jem guitars in my collection of fun shit...

Cop Rock was my first choice but it premiered in 1990.

I'll be a son of a bitch! I always thought that was an 80's show....

Well, the cat's out of the bag for next Thursday (but it won't be IBB worthy anymore)....
