The Aga Khan, the leader of the Ismaili sect of Islam for 67 years, died last Tuesday in Lisbon at age 88.

There are about 12 million Ismaili Muslims in the world. The biggest community is in India (1.5 million), with significant populations in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Tajikistan and Yemen. Their religion is more liberal than Islam as practiced in countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran, with equality between women and men.
