Lyrically Speaking - 2/6/25

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 06, 2025 12:30 am

For the decade of the 70's, the random generator picked out the year 1972. Another fine year I wasn't around for, but these songs were there according to the historical archives. Each was released or a hit on the charts in '72...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I've been prayin' for

2. Jesus blows up balloons all day
Sits on the porch swing watching them fly

3. Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the D.A. man
When I heard this woman singing a song

4. How much does it cost, I'll buy it
The time is all we've lost, I'll try it

5. It's comin' closer, the flames are now lickin' my body, mm
Won't you help me? I feel like I'm slippin' away

6. They don't abuse it
Never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it, mhm

7. Oh, little darling of mine
I just can't believe it's so
Though it seems strange to say
I never been laid so low

8. Lonely sailors pass the time a way
And talk about their homes

9. She told me, she can break your heart
And put you in misery
Since I met this little woman
I believe it's happened to me

10. I have done all that I could
To see the evil and the good without hidin'
You must help me if you can

11. And if it's bad
Don't let it get you down, you can take it.
And if it hurts
Don't let them see you cry, you can take it.

12. We can't even think of a word that rhymes

5 point bonus trivia question!: What song fittingly cockblocked Song #5 from the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, denying its artist one final number one hit.

1972 -- more my wheelhouse
For the decade of the 70's, the random generator picked out the year 1972. Another fine year I wasn't around for, but these songs were there according to the historical archives. Each was released or a hit on the charts in '72...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I've been prayin' for

I can See Clearly Now -- Johnny Nash

2. Jesus blows up balloons all day
Sits on the porch swing watching them fly

Levon -- Elton John

3. Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the D.A. man
When I heard this woman singing a song

Long Cool Woman -- The Hollies. Funny thing is, I know almost no lyrics of this song, because the echo is so distorted on the vocals. Didn't stop me from singing with it, though -- just mimicked him phonetically. So now I have to play that game where I take the phonetic lyrics and try to match them up. It was "D.A. Man" that triggered it for me here.

4. How much does it cost, I'll buy it
The time is all we've lost, I'll try it

Sunshine -- Jonathan Edwards

5. It's comin' closer, the flames are now lickin' my body, mm
Won't you help me? I feel like I'm slippin' away

Burning Love -- Elvis Presley

6. They don't abuse it
Never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it, mhm

Never Been to Spain -- Three Dog Night

7. Oh, little darling of mine
I just can't believe it's so
Though it seems strange to say
I never been laid so low

Mother and Child Reunion -- Paul Simon

8. Lonely sailors pass the time a way
And talk about their homes

Brandy (You're a fine girl) -- The Looking Glass

9. She told me, she can break your heart
And put you in misery
Since I met this little woman
I believe it's happened to me

Treat her like a Lady -- Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose

10. I have done all that I could
To see the evil and the good without hidin'
You must help me if you can

Doctor My Eyes -- Jackson Browne. I would've pegged this song as much later.

11. And if it's bad
Don't let it get you down, you can take it.
And if it hurts
Don't let them see you cry, you can take it.

Hold Your Head Up -- Argent

12. We can't even think of a word that rhymes

School's Out -- Alice Cooper

5 point bonus trivia question!: What song fittingly cockblocked Song #5 from the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, denying its artist one final number one hit.

My Ding-a-Ling. Still can't believe that song was played (and played and played) on AM radio in the 1970s.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was a hit or released sometime around 1972.

I think 1972 was the first year I ever sat by the radio when Kasey Kasem counted down the top 100 songs of the year (was it New Year's Eve or New YEar's Day?) and wrote down every song, in order. I remember being pissed off, because I missed him introducing one song, being confident that I would recognize any song on the Top 100, and came back to the radio in the middle of a song I'd never heard before -- a long-ass, rambling song about a cab driver and the woman he picks up one day. If I've got the right year, the number one song that year was The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face -- Roberta Flack.

Image Bonus: Show me something you might've seen on TV in the 70's.

I thought about repeating Land of the Lost, since you corrected me on that one -- I could have sworn that was Saturday morning staple when I was much younger. Instead, I'll go with the favorite show from the 1972 era -- remember, we were watching it on PBS as reruns, so it may have been earlier. But I remember discovering it, and then having to hide my watching it from the parents -- they wouldn't have understood.

Damit Jim!
I forgot to go back and put the artist on #9. I would have gotten it, too. Just needed a couple more minutes of thought.

It would help if I had gotten #5 (I thought I'd do better in the 70s, but I was still pretty young in 72... I'm extrapolating from your 'fittingly" and "cockblocked' hints and going with Chuck's only #1, also a previous FFF, I think

My Ding a Ling - Chuck Berry

Ha, I was going to comment on the points post for yesterday that I don't how how you remember every damned thing I've ever said and you should have enough Fanny Fun Facts stored up that you could use them as bonus questions, but I wanted to get my answers in for today's game first (and I wouldn't have much of an advantage because I'l probably forgotten a fair amount of them). Quadruple Prescient Points!!!!!

May as well go ahead and close this one since all 18 players have already played (YAY!), and I doubt anyone new is gonna come along in the next couple hours...

I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash

2. Jesus blows up balloons all day

5. It's comin' closer, the flames are now lickin' my body, mm
Won't you help me? I feel like I'm slippin' away
Burning Love - Elvis Presley (I know there's a lot of people who don't think Elvis was all that.... but this is his justification song. I unabashedly love this tune...)

6. They don't abuse it
Never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it, mhm
Never Been To Spain - Three Dog Night (Yes, there's always that one group that seems to end up in a lot of LSWE games the first week or two....)

I just can't believe it's so
Though it seems strange to say
I never been laid so low
Mother and Child Reunion - Paul Simon (Simon & Garfunkel was counted wrong per the Phil Collins rule...)

8. Lonely sailors pass the time a way

Too Late To Turn Back Now - Brothers Cornelius and Sister Rose

5 point bonus trivia question!: What song fittingly cockblocked Song #5 from the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, denying its artist one final number one hit.

My Ding A Ling - Chuck Berry (It amuses me that two big 1950's artists were 1-2 on the charts at the same time in 1972, the same way it amuses me that Tommy James and the Shondells had back to back #1 songs in late 1987...)

JJC Points:

mrk gets 3 JJC points for mumbling along with the Hollies, writing down year end countdowns (raises hand), and Brit silliness...

ear gets 2 JJC points for cheesy game shows (Is there another decade in the 20th century that is as undeniably identifiable as the 1970's from a stylistic and fashion standpoint?)

Weasel gets 2 JJC points for expanding my knowledge (I had no idea Mel tried the Men in Tights thing before the movie)....

Panic gets 2 JJC points for MTM (and I made sure all the clocks on the wall were right)....

Krox gets 3 JJC points because Tubular Bells as his guess to the cockblocking song cracked me up, and for some show Brits apparently like...

jarnon gets 3 JJC points for Image Bonuses from France...

elwood gets 3 JJC points for one of my favorite shows from the 70's...

frank gets 3 JJC points for classic commercials...

mikeh gets 2 JJC points for the beginning of MASH, which I don't think I ever caught a rerun of...

BiT gets 2 JJC points for being cocky, and because I can't make out what the image is and Google's image lookup was being a little bitch and not working for me...

Beebs gets 3 JJC points for Debbie Gibson and virginity, which may or may not be related...

Search gets 2 JJC points for <Beavis>Danny Boner-duce!!!</Beavis>....

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for early Skinimax...

melly gets 2 JJC points for watching a pitcher win 27 games on an awful team...

Earl gets 3 JJC points for Kerry Ann and kids programs (I'm just as giddy nostalgic about the ones of my era). And no, I don't remember even 10% of the FFF's I've heard over the years! But a literal atomic dong is not something one easily forgets, and I've even entertained the readers of my blog with the story of Chuck Negron before...

Sprots gets 2 JJC points for the Broncos QB getting sacked (#7 was cursed for Denver, wasn't it?)....

Bob gets 2 JJC points for Tic Tac Toe (with Alice in the Mega Man role)...

Points:

mrk 36+3
ear 28+2
Weasel 34+2
Panic 32+2
Krox 27+3
