Reading Challenge
Okay, just replying to shit and posting a new message to try out my idea. I've been putting off setting up a new laptop (oh, really? Why haven't you mentioned it?) because I've got a bunch of stuff downloaded on here that I use and don't want the hassle of putting it in dropbox or whatever. So, I had an epiphany...maybe it's not the computer but the keyboard, since it's so old that some of the letters have rubbed off of the keys. although I haven't worn any actual divots in the keys like I did on the previous one. I just plugged in a regular keyboard and so far, everything's working!!
Funny how I've gotten so used to the shitty little keyboard on the laptop that I'm going to have to learn how to type on a real one all over again...
Anyway, onto the subject at hand...
I read a lot of books, but never keep track of them and this year I decided to set a goal and keep track of the titles. Well, you can imagine how frustrating it was to try and keep a nice, formatted document with the troubles I've been having and then, yet another epiphany!
I got an email from goodreads about the 2525 challenge and I've had an account forever although I rarely use it and then realized that I could just update my reads directly from my Kindle when I finish a book and goodreads will keep track of it for me. Wow, technology...
I set a goal of 100 books and I've finished 9 in January, so I'm on track! But here's what I'm struggling with:
Should it count if I read a book that I've already read? Obviously a book I've read this year wouldn't count, but I have a few favourites that I re-read every couple of years. Also if I'm reading a series and it's been a while since the last one, I sometimes have to read it again to remember where things left off. Like the Fourth Wing series, Onyx Storm just came out, but it's been so long since I read the first two that I'm not sure if I'll be up on all of the intrigue and world building and whatnot that have gone on before. God knows I'd have enough time to read them again while I'm on the library wait list...
So, anybody have any opinions on whether re-reads should count?

Re: Reading Challenge
Also, if anybody else is doing a reading challenge or just has a goal like I do, want to have a thread and share our reads and progress like monthly or something? Maybe do some recs and the like?
Btw, I think people should read what they want and what they like and not have people judge them for it. My thought is it doesn't matter so much what you read just as long as you're reading! Therefore this idea is not meant for anybody to try to impress anybody else and my list damn sure isn't going to have any Great Classics of Literature on it anytime soon. (I will cop to actually loving Melville and Hawthorne when I was in school, but tempus fugit and all that...)
I'm not embarrassed about what I read and I don't care who knows it. I read paranormals, cozy mysteries, horror, non-fiction, downright trash and everything in between and I'm fine with it.

Re: Reading Challenge
Ohhh I like this idea. My local library is only 4 blocks away.
I’ve read six so far this month, a series called The Sun Sword by Michelle West.

Re: Reading Challenge
My reading now is almost exclusively ARC's I get through NetGalley or directly from authors, along with a few vintage mysteries for my book club. I post reviews of them on Goodreads and my website, but they don't show up in my books completed list since they come from a third party source and not Amazon (who owns Goodreads).
There's nothing wrong with re-reading books you enjoyed before. You can appreciate an author's style and skill with words and attention to detail. And, unless you've got a photographic memory, there will be some aspects of the story that you will re-remember and enjoy all over again. I read a lot of mysteries and will sometimes re-read one just to see how the author left clues that I missed the first time around.

Re: Reading Challenge
I think rereading should be allowed. It seems that my tolerance for some crap I used to read, recentylish, has expired so am either rereading or going back to older authors, eg, Jonathan Kellerman.
Got bored last month with Evanovitch's Turbo Thirty or something. Used to love her.
Must say that rereading Catcher in the Rye made me want to break something.
Always good is Elin Hildebrand, Nantucket shit. She rocks.

Re: Reading Challenge
I've never heard of Michelle West, so I looked up the synopsis of the series and they sound similar to a lot of Sarah J. Maas' books. Have you ever read her? Start with A Court of Thorns and Roses.
Usually I can figure out the endings of whodunits, but if it surprises me I will go back and try to see if there were any breadcrumbs I didn't pick up on. That's one thing I really like about my Kindle, I use the search function a lot to check on things that were earlier in the book.
I've head of Elin Hildebrand, I might even have one or two that I picked up on First Reads, but I don't think I've read them. Or I might just recognize the name from adverts and recs that show up from Amazon. Are there any buckets involved? Ha!
I will go ahead and start an "official" reading challenge thread for the year, yay!
