Lyrically Speaking - 1/31/25

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Jan 31, 2025 1:47 am

I may have canceled Tuesday Wordplay this year, but before doing that I did manage to come up with one full game... mainly because it was one of the few games (along with next Friday's) that I was actually working on mentally for the last few months of 2024 as I was listening to Mecca earworms at work. There's no sense wasting it, so I'll drop it as my first Free For All Friday game of 2025. All of the songs below have a certain word (not a super common one, obviously) that appears somewhere in all of their lyrics. I don't think this one will be that difficult to figure out, much like the six words I used last year. As usual with Friday games, this one is open until Monday morning...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the word...

1. The beat was goin' strong
Playin' my favorite song
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til he was with me, yeah, me

2. But when you're walkin' down that street
And you ain't had enough to eat
The glitter rubs right off and you're nowhere

3. Jimmy quit, Jody got married
I should've known we'd never get far

4. My hands were steady, my eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose, my steps were quick and light
And I held firmly to what I felt was right

5. If she is bad, he can't see it,
She can do no wrong,
Turn his back on his best friend if he put her down

6. Different types who wear a day coat
Pants with stripes and cutaway coat, perfect fits

7. And it kinda looks just like you
Mixed with Zach Galifianakis

8. The rain sounds so cool when it hits the barn roof
And the horses wonder who you are
Thunder drowns out what the lightning sees
You feel like a movie star

9. I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve
I tried my imagination but I was disturbed

10. There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time
I think about a love that I thought would save me

11. She sits alone, waiting for suggestions
He's so nervous, avoiding all the questions

12. Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right

What word appears in the lyrics of all the above songs?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that has the magic word of the day somewhere in the lyrics, but not title.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that has the magic word of the day somewhere in the lyrics, but not title.

I'm assuming that means no mention of dimes in parenthetical titles like "Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime)" by The Flirts. If not, I've got nothing. Which means that I will almost certainly think of at least three songs that I could have used as soon as I click on Submit.

I got plenty of nothin'.
1. The beat was goin' strong
Playin' my favorite song
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til he was with me, yeah, me

2. But when you're walkin' down that street
And you ain't had enough to eat
The glitter rubs right off and you're nowhere

3. Jimmy quit, Jody got married
I should've known we'd never get far

Rock and Roll Band, Boston

4. My hands were steady, my eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose, my steps were quick and light
And I held firmly to what I felt was right

5. If she is bad, he can't see it,
She can do no wrong,
Turn his back on his best friend if he put her down

6. Different types who wear a day coat
Pants with stripes and cutaway coat, perfect fits

7. And it kinda looks just like you
Mixed with Zach Galifianakis

8. The rain sounds so cool when it hits the barn roof
And the horses wonder who you are
Thunder drowns out what the lightning sees
You feel like a movie star

9. I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve
I tried my imagination but I was disturbed

10. There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time
I think about a love that I thought would save me

11. She sits alone, waiting for suggestions
He's so nervous, avoiding all the questions

Do You Think I'm Sexy?, Rod Stewart

12. Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right

Happy Together, The Turtles

What word appears in the lyrics of all the above songs?

Playin' my favorite song
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til he was with me, yeah, me

I Love Rock and Roll - JJ & the Blackhearts (or the Arrows if you want to be pedantic)

This was the song of the day on Bandle Friday

2. But when you're walkin' down that street
And you ain't had enough to eat
The glitter rubs right off and you're nowhere

On Broadway - George Benson

3. Jimmy quit, Jody got married
I should've known we'd never get far

Summer of 69 - Bryan Adams

4. My hands were steady, my eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose, my steps were quick and light
And I held firmly to what I felt was right

6. Different types who wear a day coat
Pants with stripes and cutaway coat, perfect fits

Putting on the Ritz - Clark Gable

If you know, you know...

7. And it kinda looks just like you
Mixed with Zach Galifianakis

Tonight Tonight - Hot Chelle Rae

La la la.... I was just thinking about this band the other day, there's a woman who works the bingo named Michelle and sometimes I sing the Beatles song to her and other times I call her Hot Chelle Rae

8. The rain sounds so cool when it hits the barn roof
And the horses wonder who you are
Thunder drowns out what the lightning sees
You feel like a movie star

Raspberry Beret - Prince

9. I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve
I tried my imagination but I was disturbed

867-5309 Jenny - Tommy Tutone

Is it parenthetical or a slash? I don't know, so I'll abstain from either...

10. There's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time
I think about a love that I thought would save me

Operator - Jim Croce

Thinking about the krox I was trying to remember if Sylvia's Mother ever mentions a dime or just cents and it made me think of this one

11. She sits alone, waiting for suggestions
He's so nervous, avoiding all the questions

Do You Think I'm Sexy - Rod Stewart

Do you ever wake up with a song in your head? In the last couple weeks I've had Reason to Believe and The First Cut is the Deepest taking up residence and it took me forever to get the right Rod cadence for this one in my brain to come up with the title

12. Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right

Happy Together - Turtles

This was the song my junior high school boyfriend sang to me. Ah, young love...

3. Jimmy quit, Jody got married

Happy Together - Turtles

Since this was a one-off Tuesday Wordplay game, I didn't adhere to the rule I used last year that the word EXACTLY had to be in the lyrics (i.e., "dimes" didn't work)... so as long as song form of "dime" was in the lyrics, it was OK. However, I did explicitly say it couldn't be in the title, so I wasn't lenient there...

Image Bonus: You know what to do...

I came into this one with a couple ideas that would translate to instant IBB's. Candice Bergen as Sprint's "Dime Lady" in the 90's. Or something that alluded to this favorite line of mine....

However, as it turned out, I found a new favorite... as BiT's dime saver brought back all kinds of nostalgic happies of similar coin saver things we had as kids. That it had a squirrel on the cover was inconsequential. BiT gets the IBB to add to his savings book...

JJC Points:

Weasel gets 3 JJC points for Elmo pooping on Sesame Street's time and getting fired for it...

Panic gets 2 JJC points for copying off of Weasel's paper, and editing to admit it...

jarnon gets 2 JJC points for working Imbolic into the IB every year...

frank gets 3 JJC points for Clark Gable (I wasn't impressed) and for photos of Martians (and maybe some skin)....

BiT gets a supermax for thrifty squirrels...

mikeh gets 2 JJC points for stopping on a dime (I wondered if someone would use this angle)...

elwood gets a JJC point for being nickel and dimed to death...

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for the good stuff (love the tagline on the bag)....

melly gets 3 JJC points for Dime Detective Magazine costing 15 cents...

mrk gets 2 JJC points for beating Earl to the punch....

Bob gets a JJC point to add to his plenty of nothin'...

Sprots gets 2 JJC points for making me look up if Roosevelt Grier really sang "On Broadway," and for the unasked for LB Image...

Earl gets 3 JJC points for confusing poor Michelle, Rod on the brain, and always finding a way to claim prescient points (Which after sixteen seasons are STILL not a part of the LSWE scoring format)....

I would respectfully ask you to please reconsider an image bonus of the mattress picture by looking carefully at the words contained therein.

The IBB is unfair, all we had was the Thrifty Nickel...ha!

Meanwhile, "old posers"??? Unless someone answered Fred Astaire that I didn't see, you are speaking of Clark Fucking Gable, dude! Put some respect on the man's name! I always answer Gable when this comes up, so you should be used to it by now. I think I've stated before that Idiot's Delight is one of my favourite CG flicks, but I don't think I've shared this Fanny Fun Fact: He absolutely refused to do that scene because he thought he would look foolish, but Carole Lombard talked him into giving it a try and coached him through the number.

And if you tell me that FFF means nothing because you've never heard of Carole Lombard well, you're beyond help....
