Bit.ly Bites Me

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Wed Jan 29, 2025 9:11 am

I've been using bit.ly on my website for years as a link shortener so I can more easily post links to my review pages on Facebook, Twitter, and other venues. For those who don't know, you enter a long URL into bit.ly and it turns it into something that looks like bit.ly/xxx1234, or some similar combination of seven letters and digits. When I joined, several years ago, they offered a free plan that allowed me to create 10,000 links a month, along with QR codes and link tracking and some other features. They've now cut the free plan down to five links a month, which is practically useless. Fortunately, they grandfathered me in for a while (ironically, none of their current pay plans allow you 10,000 links a month).

When I created my most recent link, I got a popup screen saying that beginning in February, the bit.ly links would go to a preview page first that could contain advertising. They didn't mention cutting down my number of links a month, but their cheapest paid plan, which has 100 links a month, costs $10 a month (less on an annual plan). Needless to say, I don't have enough business to justify paying $10 a month for that.

So, it's back to the drawing board, looking for viable free alternatives (something I'm very good at). I work harder now at a website that generates almost nothing than I did when I was employed. But it keeps my mind focused, which is the main reason I do it (and it stokes my ego).
