A sportswriter friend who'd become a schoolteacher after she left newspapers is okay, as are her husband and cats. The school where she teaches- taught - is destroyed and her neighborhood, in ruins.

But she is grateful for their escape and the outpouring of concern and offers of help from friends.

Other writer friends are okay - glad to see uly marked himself safe.

ADDED - Just got a message from a Philly screenwriter who was just in Pacific Palisades before the holidays.

She stayed with a writer friend as she was meeting some people for a couple of projects. She said loved the area because it had such a neighborhood feel.

Is Bob #### OK? I"m not sure how close he lives (or works) to the fires.

I'm fine, thanks. I live in a very large property called Park La Brea. We're so safe that an evacuation center has been established in the city park that's literally across the street from Park La Brea. Air quality sucks, of course, but that's manageable.

I've been a little concerned that my girlfriend might be forced to evacuate (she lives in Santa Monica), but it looks like she's just far enough south and east that she'll remain outside any evacuation zones. --Bob

Jackie Fox had to evacuate without her cats. She's back home now, but the cats are freaked out. She's ready to evacuate again if needed.

I'm sorry, who's Jacke Fox?

A misspelling of Jackie Fox. She was here briefly around the time of her appearance on Millionaire but I don't remember her screen name. She also won (if memory serves) 4 games of Jeopardy! but did not qualify for the Tournament of Champions. --Bob

Yes, thanks. I'm not expecting any issues for myself other than bad air quality. My girlfriend lives in the middle (more or less) of Santa Monica, so if she needs to evacuate, it means the damage is cataclysmic. --Bob

Can't get up to date stuff but some indicate evacuations?

Yes, but the evacuation zones are miles away from me. She's much closer to an evacuation warning zone (meaning a zone that MIGHT be ordered to evacuate but hasn't yet), but still outside it. --Bob

Those of us who made the pilgrimage to Las Vegas every August know Jackie.

They had an evacuation order for Hollywood Hills but canceled it today.

The son of one of my wife's coworkers works for the California wildfire agency (whatever they call it) and I think he is a helicopter pilot. So we might have seen him doing some of the cool and very accurate waterdrops on the fire.

Yeah, I was out there shooting a movie. It was only my third time in Southern California. And the cast and crew just happened to be staying in.... Altadena. We were evacuated at 3:30 AM the morning of January 8th. We knew it was coming, of course, as we could see the fires. At the time, I thought it was better to stay put than face the traffic. Fortunately, traffic near the 4 AM hour wasn't an issue. With the fires all around, it felt like driving out of Armageddon.

Somehow, our producer pulled everything together, got us alternative lodging and alternate shooting locations and got the movie shot.

That's good to hear.

I just heard that my stepson, Eric, who's a firefighter in Idaho, is down there. They have to stay in a hotel over an hour from the fires.
