... the first Burger King opened in Miami. The chain actually started the year before in Jacksonville as "Insta-Burger-King," a name derived from the Insta-broiler they used to grill the burgers. The Miami franchisees opened their first location on December 4, 1954 (still called Insta-Burger-King), but when the original owners ran into financial difficulties, the franchisees bought all their national rights in 1959 and renamed the company Burger King. The Miami franchisees first started making the famous Whopper in 1957.
