The greatest gymnastics coach ever died Friday at age 82.
Károlyi's youthful gymnasts rocked the Montreal Olympics in 1976. After a falling out with the Communist government, he defected to the U.S. in 1981. He coached gold medalist Mary Lou Retton in 1984.
Károlyi and his wife Márta trained generations of gymnasts at their Texas “ranch” and coached several U.S. women’s teams. He was criticized for his harsh coaching style and for being unaware of team doctor Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse of the girls.
