An unoriginal observation

Watching the Astros. Probably watch the Texans tonight.

Just looking at it it seems silly. Grown men and women playing games with a ball, running, for lotsa money, etc.

But every society, regardless how miserable the circumstances, play games. Balls, cards, stones.

It's sorta encouraging for the human race that not everything is life or death. Until it is. Unless it's the playoffs.

Well, there's that.

Well, back in the Roman Empire days, the games were life or death for the gladiators. And the pay? You win today your get to eat tonight.

Yea Astros. But those silly Rangers don’t help at all this weekend. I think is was on purpose.

Glad to be able to watch the Texan tonight. They don’t get much TV time up here in the Cowboy's’ market.

Roman gladiators did not usually fight to the death. While some matches ended fatally, most were designed to entertain the crowd without resulting in death. Gladiators were valuable investments for their owners, and losing them in every fight would have been economically unwise.

Fights often ended with one gladiator conceding defeat, and the decision was sometimes influenced by the editor (the person responsible for the games) or the crowd’s reaction. Additionally, there were rules and a level of training that aimed to minimize fatal outcomes in the arena.
