Grab Bag - Bag 4

July 18, 2024

Speaking Lyrically: A song chain

Below are 12 songs whose titles form a chain, i.e., for each song pair, the last word from the first title is the same as the first word in the next title.

One point for title, one point for artist, one point for each correct song in the longest chain (up to 12 bonus points for a completed, 12-song chain).

1- Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart

2- Maybe I'm wrong
Won't you tell me if I'm coming on too strong?
This heart of mine has been hurt before
This time I want to be sure

3- She's juicy and she's trouble
She gets it to me good
My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood

4- We get it on most every night
And when that ol' moon gets so big and bright
It's a supernatural delight

5- We'll lay back and observe the constellations
And watch the moon smilin' bright
I'll play the radio on southern stations
'Cause southern bells are hell at night

6- A love like ours
(A love like ours)
Can never fade away
You know it's only just begun

7- I give my hand to you with all my heart
I can't wait to live my life with you, I can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

8- Whoa-oh-oh-oh
I was so surprised and shocked, and I wondered, too
If, by chance, you heard it for yourself
I never told a soul just how I've been feeling over you
But they said it really loud, they said it on the air

9- I was tryin' to find my way home
But all I heard was a drone
Bouncing off a satellite
Crushin' the last lone American night

10- Doesn't have a point of view
Knows not where he's going to
Isn't he a bit like you and me?

11- Monopoly, Twenty-One, checkers and chess
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Mister Fred Blassie in a breakfast mess

12- Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after the same rainbow's end
Waitin' 'round the bend
My huckleberry friend

Bonus: Generate a ten-song chain complete with lyrics for two points. Okay, okay, forget that. Make it two titles that share a word or two.

Total points: 38

1- Every day you get one more yard

The Waiting - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (Will never hear this song as anything but "Ned Beatty Had The Hardest Part")

2- Maybe I'm wrong
Won't you tell me if I'm coming on too strong?
This heart of mine has been hurt before
This time I want to be sure
Waiting For A Squirrel Like You - Foreigner (Annie Bonus in this game, right?)

3- She's juicy and she's trouble
She gets it to me good
My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood
You Should Be Dancing - Bee Gees (Perfect follow up to the disco game... best disco song ever)

4- We get it on most every night
And when that ol' moon gets so big and bright
It's a supernatural delight
Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest

5- We'll lay back and observe the constellations
And watch the moon smilin' bright
I'll play the radio on southern stations
'Cause southern bells are hell at night
Moonlight Feels Right - Starbuck (I was going to be disappointed if this one wasn't the followup for moonlight...)

6- A love like ours
(A love like ours)
Can never fade away
You know it's only just begun
Right... well, so much for the perfecto

7- I give my hand to you with all my heart
I can't wait to live my life with you, I can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you
.... On

8- Whoa-oh-oh-oh
I was so surprised and shocked, and I wondered, too
If, by chance, you heard it for yourself
I never told a soul just how I've been feeling over you
But they said it really loud, they said it on the air
On the Radio - Donna Summer (Gotten only because of the last line)

9- I was tryin' to find my way home
But all I heard was a drone
Bouncing off a satellite
Crushin' the last lone American night
Radio Nowhere - ??? (That could be the title of a song...)

10- Doesn't have a point of view
Knows not where he's going to
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man - Beatles

11- Monopoly, Twenty-One, checkers and chess
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Mister Fred Blassie in a breakfast mess
Man on the Moon - REM

12- Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after the same rainbow's end
Waitin' 'round the bend
My huckleberry friend
Moon.... I know I've used this at some point in LSWE because of that last line

Bonus: Generate a ten-song chain complete with lyrics for two points. Okay, okay, forget that. Make it two titles that share a word or two.

If word sharing is all that's necessary, then I'll submit two of my favorite unappreciated songs of the early 80's:

Come Back and Stay - Paul Young

Waiting is the hardest part, Tom Petty

I guess Waiting is the title because the next song is Waiting for a Girl Like You.

Waiting, Tom Petty, final answer

2- Maybe I'm wrong
Won't you tell me if I'm coming on too strong?
This heart of mine has been hurt before
This time I want to be sure

Can never fade away
You know it's only just begun

Right

7- I give my hand to you with all my heart
I can't wait to live my life with you, I can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

And there goes the chain. I concede to LB.

8- Whoa-oh-oh-oh
I was so surprised and shocked, and I wondered, too
If, by chance, you heard it for yourself
I never told a soul just how I've been feeling over you

LB gets the wins because he knew a couple artists I didn't. But maybe I'm still ahead!

The Waiting - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

2- Maybe I'm wrong
Won't you tell me if I'm coming on too strong?
This heart of mine has been hurt before
This time I want to be sure

Waiting for a Girl Like You - Foreigner

3- She's juicy and she's trouble
She gets it to me good
My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood

You Should Be Dancing - Bee Gees

This is beyond weird! For some unknown reason, this song has been going through my head nonstop for the last three days or so. Where are my internal prescient points?

4- We get it on most every night
And when that ol' moon gets so big and bright
It's a supernatural delight

Dancing in the Moonlight - Harvest

Dammit, this song has been used so many times and I'm still never sure whether it's Harvest or King Harvest. Generally whichever one I put is the wrong one...

5- We'll lay back and observe the constellations
And watch the moon smilin' bright
I'll play the radio on southern stations
'Cause southern bells are hell at night

Moonlight Feels Right - Starbuck

6- A love like ours
(A love like ours)
Can never fade away
You know it's only just begun

Right Back to Where We Started From - Maxine Nightingale

When the Bees Gees got into my head, it made me want to watch Slap Shot again. But then I thought that was Leo Sayer...dammit I need to look this up. Or just watch Slap Shot again... You know what?? I think Hansen's Disease put the Bee Gees in my head because it made me think of the Hanson Brothers, which made me want to watch Slap Shot, which made me think of the Bee Gees, which made me think of Maxine Nigh.....dammitt!! I don't care if you award them or not, I need some kind of damn bonus points heah!!

7- I give my hand to you with all my heart
I can't wait to live my life with you, I can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

From Now On - Your Guess is as Good as Mine....

It's a chain thing, you wouldn't understand....

8- Whoa-oh-oh-oh
I was so surprised and shocked, and I wondered, too
If, by chance, you heard it for yourself
