Irena Sendler obit in the Economist

#1 Post by themanintheseersuckersuit » Sun May 25, 2008 10:27 am

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I love this picture of her as an old lady. She looks so happy.

Here's a story about how Al Gore stole the Peace Prize from her.

One part of that obit seems wrong to me.
Auschwitz, for example, is still often referred to as a “Polish death camp”—rather than one run by the country's Nazi occupiers, in which huge numbers of Polish citizens perished.
Do people really interpret "Polish death camp" as meaning not a Nazi one? I always thought of that usage as geographic rather than any sort of attempt to put responsibility on Poles.

Hmmm. A little Google research shows that the Polish government is upset by this usage. Interesting.

I suppose that the location is not that big of a deal and "Nazi death camp" has no room for misinterpretation.
No matter where you go, there you are.
