Lyrically Speaking - 3/1/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 29, 2024 10:03 pm

Parting is such sweet sorrow, and here we have the final game of the 2024 LSWE. I scrapped the idea I had for the finale a while back, and still didn't know what I was going to use even just a few hours ago. I figure I talk about Mecca earworms enough that I may as well throw a bunch of ones I haven't used so far into a game for the finale. Retail muzak isn't what it used to be, and some of the songs may surprise you. But these have all been played a lot recently while I've been working hard at night, and it may not necessarily be the same songs you'd hear if you strolled into your local Walmart during the day. After Thursday's fiasco, I also played nice and only considered songs from the 20th Century.

It's been a blast, and I hope you all had fun playing as well!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. In the day we sweat it out on the streets
Of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory
In suicide machines

2. She says, "We've gotta hold on to what we've got
It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not

3. I hitched a ride with a vending machine repair man
He said he's been down this road more than twice

4. Up all night with Freddie King
I got to tell you, poker's his thing
Booze and ladies, keep me right
As long as we can make it to the show tonight

5. 'Cause I'm leavin' in the morning
And I must see you again
We'll have one more night together

6. Elegance in eloquence
For sale or rent or hire
Should I say yes and match his best?
Then I would be a liar

7. Used to go to dinner almost every night
Danced until I thought I'd lose my breath, ah
Now it seems your dancin' feet are always on my couch
Good thing I cook or else we'd starve to death

8. Baby, close your eyes and listen to the music
Drifting through a summer breeze
It's a groovy night and I can show you how to use it
Come along with me and put your mind at ease

9. Button your lip baby
Button your coat
Let's go out dancing
Go for the throat

10. Come on, baby
We better make a start
You better make it soon
Before you break my heart

11. Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry

12. Well, I read some books, and I read some magazines
About those high-class ladies down in New Orleans

13. Who's that lady coming down the road?
Who's that lady?
Who's that woman walking through my door?
What's the score?

14. Captivating, stimulating
She's such a sexy lady
Filled with space age design

15. They gave you life
And in return you gave them hell
As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale

16. If you say run
I'll run with you
And if you say hide
We'll hide

17. Paint the town, take a bow
Thank everybody
You're gonna do it again
You are the few, the proud
You are the antibody
Mind, soul and zen

18. Well If I get edgy, I want you to know
I never mean to take it out on you

19. Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

20. She doesn't know your name
And your heart beats like a subway train
Ooh it makes you wanna die

Thanks for the game!
1. In the day we sweat it out on the streets
Of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory
In suicide machines

Born to Run, Broooooce Springsteen

2. She says, "We've gotta hold on to what we've got
It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not

3. I hitched a ride with a vending machine repair man
He said he's been down this road more than twice

4. Up all night with Freddie King
I got to tell you, poker's his thing
Booze and ladies, keep me right
As long as we can make it to the show tonight

5. 'Cause I'm leavin' in the morning
And I must see you again
We'll have one more night together

6. Elegance in eloquence
For sale or rent or hire
Should I say yes and match his best?
Then I would be a liar

7. Used to go to dinner almost every night
Danced until I thought I'd lose my breath, ah
Now it seems your dancin' feet are always on my couch
Good thing I cook or else we'd starve to death

8. Baby, close your eyes and listen to the music
Drifting through a summer breeze
It's a groovy night and I can show you how to use it
Come along with me and put your mind at ease

9. Button your lip baby
Button your coat
Let's go out dancing
Go for the throat

10. Come on, baby
We better make a start
You better make it soon
Before you break my heart

11. Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry

Sweet Child of Mine, Guns 'n' Roses

12. Well, I read some books, and I read some magazines
About those high-class ladies down in New Orleans

13. Who's that lady coming down the road?
Who's that lady?
Who's that woman walking through my door?
What's the score?

14. Captivating, stimulating
She's such a sexy lady
Filled with space age design

15. They gave you life
And in return you gave them hell
As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale

16. If you say run
I'll run with you
And if you say hide
We'll hide

17. Paint the town, take a bow
Thank everybody
You're gonna do it again
You are the few, the proud
You are the antibody
Mind, soul and zen

18. Well If I get edgy, I want you to know
I never mean to take it out on you

19. Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

Who Are You?, The Who

Spoiler
I only go to Mecca at night, since it's on the way home from bingo, so nothing would surprise me. I was just in there an hour ago and singing along to something for all I was worth, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it was....

It's been a blast, and I hope you all had fun playing as well!

I had a lot of fun and I especially liked the switch up on the themes. Thank you for keeping things fresh, yet familiar. Two of the three games I missed were beyond my control. I already explained the O game, but my computer started acting crazy right after I finished my taxes Thursday night (either in silent protest or because Earl was doing the boogaloo on the keyboard as if I didn't know it was past his evening snack time. My auto sign ins weren't working and I couldn't put them in manually because I could only type in upper case and symbols, even though the shift wasn't on).

Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen

2. She says, "We've gotta hold on to what we've got
It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not

Living on a Prayer - Bon Jovi

I hear this all the time at the Mecca Market. It's also the ringtone for my sister, which has caused highlarity on more than one occasion.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That last part was Earl doing the boogaloo yet again, but he's already his his nightly cookies!

3. I hitched a ride with a vending machine repair man
He said he's been down this road more than twice

4. Up all night with Freddie King
I got to tell you, poker's his thing
Booze and ladies, keep me right
As long as we can make it to the show tonight

We're an American Band - Grand Funk

Another song I've been singing along with since child
3++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ (dammit, Earl1!) and I've never noticed Freddy King. Also I want extra I WAS RIGHT points on So What!!!!1 I'll explain how I found out later, it's a fun story) Also, Fanny Fun? Fact: I believe that Sweet Connie passed away last year....

5. 'Cause I'm leavin' in the morning
And I must see you again
We'll have one more night together

Last Train to Clarksville - Monkees

6. Elegance in eloquence
For sale or rent or hire
Should I say yes and match his best?
Then I would be a liar

When Smokey Sings - ABC

Is this why you're constantly using it in LSWE?

7. Used to go to dinner almost every night
Danced until I thought I'd lose my breath, ah
Now it seems your dancin' feet are always on my couch
Good thing I cook or else we'd starve to death

What Have You Done For Me Lately - Janet Jackson

8. Baby, close your eyes and listen to the music
Drifting through a summer breeze
It's a groovy night and I can show you how to use it
Come along with me and put your mind at ease

9. Button your lip baby

Mixed Emotions - Rolling Stones

10. Come on, baby
We better make a start

Before you break my heart

11. Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry

Sweet Child of Mine - Guns n' Roses

I saw an IG post by someone the other day that looked to be late teens/early 20s saying if you recognized these songs your parents raised you right.... this and Living on a Prayer were on it. What?!!
I need to go back and see if I can find it and list the 8 or 10 songs. It was completely sad...

12. Well, I read some books, and I read some magazines
About those high-class ladies down in New Orleans

Honky Cat - Elton John

They seem to play a lot of Elton at Mecca. I remember singing along to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road a while back

13. Who's that lady coming down the road?
Who's that lady?
Who's that woman walking through my door?
What's the score?

Get Out of My Dreams - Billy Ocean

Fanny Fun Fact: Billy Ocean got the idea for this song after hearing Ringo's version of You're Sixteen singing she walked out of a dream and into my car (instead of arms). Also, my dad's band's version of that chorus was: You're sixteen, you're beautiful, I'll do time....

14. Captivating, stimulating
She's such a sexy lady
Filled with space age design

Dancing Machine - Jackson 5

and Cher, when they did this on her variety show. The highest unintentional camp you'll ever see...

This particular part starts at 4:10, but the whole thing is worth a watch...

15. They gave you life
And in return you gave them hell
As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale

16. If you say run
I'll run with you
And if you say hide
We'll hide

Let's Dance - David Bowie

17. Paint the town, take a bow
Thank everybody
You're gonna do it again
You are the few, the proud
You are the antibody
Mind, soul and zen

18. Well If I get edgy, I want you to know
I never mean to take it out on you

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Santa Esmeralda

I said what I said....

19. Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

Won't Get Fooled Again - Who

20. She doesn't know your name
And your heart beats like a subway train
Ooh it makes you wanna die

Maria - Blondie

Kroxquo Bonus: Name a song with artist you've heard while shopping recently, or a song you'd expect to hear as muzak at a store.

Superman - Three Doors Down

Yes, I heard this at the Mecca Market a few weeks ago and it made me lose control. There weren't many people there at that time of night, but they weren't really having my antics....

Edited to add the classic Cher Show performance

It was funny how many of these songs got played over the weekend, especially last night along when I heard about half of them. Mecca Radio is variety without the variety....

1. In the day we sweat it out on the streets
Of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory
In suicide machines
Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen (It was either this or Brilliant Disguise, and I hate the latter song...)

2. She says, "We've gotta hold on to what we've got
It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not
Living On A Prayer - Bon Jovi

3. I hitched a ride with a vending machine repair man
He said he's been down this road more than twice
Every Day Is A Winding Road - Sheryl Crow

4. Up all night with Freddie King
I got to tell you, poker's his thing
Booze and ladies, keep me right
As long as we can make it to the show tonight
We're An American Band - Grand Funk Railroad (Almost every night...)

5. 'Cause I'm leavin' in the morning
And I must see you again
We'll have one more night together
Last Train To Clarksville - Monkees

6. Elegance in eloquence
For sale or rent or hire
Should I say yes and match his best?
Then I would be a liar
When Smokey Sings - ABC

A Little Less Conversation - Elvis Presley (This seems to mostly get played during the 2AM hour when I'm trying to take a nap at the Automotive desk during my lunch hour. It's weird when you're in and out of sleep every five to ten minutes and the next thing you know it's in the middle of a completely different song than the last thing you heard...)

9. Button your lip baby
Button your coat
Let's go out dancing
Go for the throat
Mixed Emotion - Rolling Stones (This one was played last night. I hate how classic rock radio seems to have ended the Stones' careers at "Start Me Up." They had a lot of good songs after that, this maybe being my all time fave of theirs...)

10. Come on, baby
We better make a start
You better make it soon
Before you break my heart
Everywhere - Fleetwood Mac

11. Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry
Sweet Child O Mine - Guns N Roses

12. Well, I read some books, and I read some magazines
About those high-class ladies down in New Orleans
Honky Cat - Elton John (Mecca tends to play Good Elton, as opposed to the radio station I listen to when me and Mon go to lunch on Wednesdays, which plays the Unholy Trinity of Shitty Elton songs, "Rocket Man," "Tiny Dancer," and that absolute piece of shit "Your Song" over and over and over again....)

13. Who's that lady coming down the road?
Who's that lady?
Who's that woman walking through my door?
What's the score?
Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car - Billy Ocean (This is one of those persistent earworms that seems to have been in their regular rotation for a few years now...)

14. Captivating, stimulating
She's such a sexy lady
Filled with space age design
Dancing Machine - Jackson 5 (With or without Cher...)

15. They gave you life
And in return you gave them hell
As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale
Shout - Tears For Fears (They actually blur out the "hell" in this song, though it's OK for Sammy to say "masturbation" and Billy to say "bitching." Not quite as WTF as them blurring out "killing" from the song "High Hopes," but still really dumb...)

16. If you say run
I'll run with you
And if you say hide
We'll hide
Let's Dance - David Bowie (If I hadn't used "Young Americans" in the president game, it would have turned up here...)

17. Paint the town, take a bow
Thank everybody
You're gonna do it again
You are the few, the proud
You are the antibody
Mind, soul and zen
Then The Morning Comes - Smash Mouth (Did anyone get this one? This is Smash Mouth's best song! Which is saying something, because all of their hits were great....)

18. Well If I get edgy, I want you to know
I never mean to take it out on you
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - The Animals (Or the disco band who did my 25th favorite cover song of all time, at least as of my 2015 blog countdown)....

19. Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
We Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who

20. She doesn't know your name
And your heart beats like a subway train
Ooh it makes you wanna die
Maria - Blondie (Far and away Blondie's best song, and it was a hit all over the world except here in the US. We suck...)

Image Bonus: Shop 'til you drop!

There were a lot of good entries in this game. After careful consideration, I'm going to give the final IBB to the only player who conveniently FORGOT to thank me for slaving over a hot stove to make these games.... Sprots, because the kids selling rocks cracked me up.

JJC Points:

Sprots gets 3 JJC points for kids ripping off tourists...

Panic gets 2 JJC points for threatening sales...

Weasel gets 3 JJC points for a version of Africa that has koalas and flamingoes (whoever made that meme didn't realize that's not a Mecca), and for the ever growing parade of gratitude...

mikeh gets 2 JJC points for a typical Saturday night at Mecca with no evening assoicates on duty to help customers...

frank gets 2 JJC points for the ghost that knocks stuff off the shelves at night (The Indian in our store)...

Krox gets a supermax for Kroxing Martin Luther as an artist, I'm pretty sure an LSWE first...

BiT gets 2 JJC points for a flat screen TV fight...

Beebs gets a supermax for glove compartment (glovebox!) and lots of Ed....

Vandal gets a supermax for better books than we have on sale right now (unless you want to buy a bunch of Taylor Swift shit meant to brainwash kids)...

melly gets a JJC point for an August trip to the mall...

jarnon gets 3 JJC points for Kroxing an annoying Mecca earworm, and for Pets.com (Had it actually been Pets.com, it would have been an instant supermax and IBB)...

Bob gets 3 JJC points for Broooooce and one of the lamer game shows from my childhood...

Earl gets a supermax for the Earl Boogaloo, lame excuses, Cher trying to outdance Tito, and Santa Esmeralda (I didn't take her Krox though since the song is "Kryptonite," you can't win 'em all)....

And of course, everyone who thanked me for running the LSWE (which would be everyone EXCEPT SportsFan68) gets a three point bonus (The Weasel Bonus) on top of all other points earned!!!

Thanks, I thought you would like that.

I didn't forget. I'm still mad at you for your discriminatory handling of all my pleas for justice.

I only discriminate against people who don't like squirrels, and I know you don't fall into that category....
