Lyrically Speaking - 2/22/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 22, 2024 7:03 am

Father Time creeps on into more uncomfortable territory for many of my players, as this week's game focuses on the 2000's, the 00's, or however you'd refer to them. The magic year is 2002 in particular. That was the year I ran my first Lyrically Speaking contest in October, coincidentally, also the month I got my first computer as the Web TV Thingie® was being phased out by my cable company. I was four years into my Mecca career, and...... boy, was that an interesting Christmas that took us until the following Easter to dig out from under. Anyway, here's some songs from that year that may or may not have been the soundtrack to your 2002 experience...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. The waves keep on crashing on me for some reason
But your love keeps on coming like a thunder bolt

2. Chill out, whatcha yellin' for?
Lay back, it's all been done before

3. Just try your best
Try everything you can
And don't you worry what they tell themselves
When you're away

4. One mile to every inch of
Your skin like porcelain
One pair of candy lips and
Your bubblegum tongue

5. I need you to get up up on the dance floor
Give that man what he askin for
Cuz I feel like bustin loose and I feel like touchin you
And cant nobody stop the juice so baby tell me whats the use

6. My friend, the communist
Holds meetings in his RV
I can't afford his gas
So I'm stuck here watching TV

7. Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?
Would you run, and never look back?
Would you cry, if you saw me cryin'?
And would you save my soul tonight?

8. Someone told me
Love would all save us
But, how can that be
Look what love gave us

9. If a great wave shall fall
And fall upon us all
Then between the sand and stone
Could you make it on your own?

10. Every night, every day
Just to be there in your arms
Won't you stay
Won't you lay
stay forever and ever and ever and ever

11. You could be my someone, you could be my scene
You know that I'll protect you from all of the obscene
I wonder what you're doing, imagine where you are
There's oceans in between us, but that's not very far

12. Two trailer park girls go 'round the outside
'Round the outside, 'round the outside

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or on the charts in 2002 (two year cushion... or I might take anything kinda close).

Image Bonus: If you remember the 00's, you probably didn't live through them...

Spoiler
I was hoping the 2000 year would be 2006 or later. My dad passed in July of 06 (I was just thinking the other day that it's impossible that it will be 18 years in a few months. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him and he's still in my dreams all the time. Ugh, even just typing this is getting me soggy. Anywho, I wasn't able to sleep for months, so I just sat in the recliner with either music videos or the radio on and that's when I started listening to current music again. Kind of weird to associate a parent's passing with Sexyback, but there you have it.... Luckily this is close enough that I know a few retroactively.

1. The waves keep on crashing on me for some reason
But your love keeps on coming like a thunder bolt

Hella Good - No Doubt

2. Chill out, whatcha yellin' for?
Lay back, it's all been done before

Complicated - Avril Lavigne

I've been trying to place 2002 in line with my memories and I remember them constantly playing this at the bowling alley when my sister and I were in a parent-child league with my two nephews.
I used to sing this to my oldest one (he was like 11) and embarrass the hell out of him. Unfortunately, the only other song I remember there was the Cha Cha Glide...

3. Just try your best
Try everything you can
And don't you worry what they tell themselves
When you're away

The Middle - Jimmy Eat World

Dammit, that is when my pop punk sensibilities were born and so I knew the time frame of this one! I got another idea from Avril, so I'm holding my krox breath...

4. One mile to every inch of
Your skin like porcelain
One pair of candy lips and
Your bubblegum tongue

Your Body is a Wonderland - John Mayer

Amazing how many of these videos and songs were still playing 4 years later, although I might not have gotten this one without the bubblegum tongue line (was this in a snippet game?)

5. I need you to get up up on the dance floor
Give that man what he askin for
Cuz I feel like bustin loose and I feel like touchin you
And cant nobody stop the juice so baby tell me whats the use

Hot in Herre - Nelly

Okay, Ride Wit Me might be a possibility if my current krox is cruelly snatched away from me....

6. My friend, the communist
Holds meetings in his RV
I can't afford his gas
So I'm stuck here watching TV

7. Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?
Would you run, and never look back?
Would you cry, if you saw me cryin'?
And would you save my soul tonight?

Hero - Enrique Iglesias

God, I love this song and I don't care who knows it!! He was in Denver last week with Pitbull and Ricky Martin on the Trilogy tour but I was sadly unable to attend

8. Someone told me
Love would all save us
But, how can that be
Look what love gave us

Hero - Nickelback

You muthfucka!! One of the few bands I was actually listening to back then... I feel I should go back and edit my Avril comments because they will amuse you too much. I was going to mention this under the previous song, but it would stir up a huge Mariah Carey rant and I figure ain't nobody got time for that....

9. If a great wave shall fall
And fall upon us all
Then between the sand and stone
Could you make it on your own?

10. Every night, every day
Just to be there in your arms
Won't you stay
Won't you lay
stay forever and ever and ever and ever

11. You could be my someone, you could be my scene
You know that I'll protect you from all of the obscene
I wonder what you're doing, imagine where you are
There's oceans in between us, but that's not very far

12. Two trailer park girls go 'round the outside
'Round the outside, 'round the outside

Without Me - Eminem

And there goes Lose Yourself....

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was released or on the charts in 2002 (two year cushion... or I might take anything kinda close).

Grenade Jumper - Fallout Boy

I wasn't sure enough about Nelly, but Jimmy Eat World reminded me of my emo punk fandom and I might be pretty damned on with this one (or maybe just one year off). Plus I kind of personally know Hey Chris, so there's that....

Image Bonus: If you remember the 00's, you probably didn't live through them...

Imagine the best image of all time here and just give me the IBB...

I know you won't get a Hey Chris reference, so I didn't actually use him, but hey, here's Tardar Sauce back for your viewing pleasure!!

My first one didn't work, but it's not worth it to try and figure it out while YOUR REIGNING WORLD CHAMPION DENVER NUGGETS!!!!!!!11 are busy kicking ass on the Wizlets, so here's a different one for you

Your skin like porcelain
One pair of candy lips and
Your bubblegum tongue
Your Body Is A Wonderland - John Mayer (I pretty much categorically hate all of this guy's music, and one of the few things I don't miss about classic Mecca Radio was them playing the everloving piss out of John Mayer....)

5. I need you to get up up on the dance floor
Give that man what he askin for
Cuz I feel like bustin loose and I feel like touchin you
And cant nobody stop the juice so baby tell me whats the use
Hot In Herre - Nelly (I ranked "Trash Day" as my #1 favorite Weird Al parody in the blog countdown I ran last year.... a last minute upset over the more popular "Word Crimes"...)

6. My friend, the communist
Holds meetings in his RV
I can't afford his gas
So I'm stuck here watching TV
Soak Up The Sun - Sheryl Crow (See #3... they played this song all the time during BP at old Busch Stadium in 2005 [its last year, so I can pinpoint it], and I assumed it was something new...)

7. Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?
Would you run, and never look back?
Would you cry, if you saw me cryin'?
And would you save my soul tonight?
Hero - Enrique Iglasias

8. Someone told me
Love would all save us
But, how can that be
Look what love gave us
Hero - Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott (Just Chad was fine, but some of you fell victims to the PCR... this was not a Nickelback band song. Oh, and the rock station we turned on after the evening kids left played THIS SONG three times an hour in 2002...)

9. If a great wave shall fall
And fall upon us all
Then between the sand and stone
Could you make it on your own?
Wherever You Will Go - The Calling

10. Every night, every day
Just to be there in your arms
Won't you stay
Won't you lay
stay forever and ever and ever and ever
Can't Get You Out Of My Head - Kylie Minogue (I love Kylie, but she can keep this one. I once saw a "poll" that ranked this the most inanely catchy song of all time....)

11. You could be my someone, you could be my scene
You know that I'll protect you from all of the obscene
I wonder what you're doing, imagine where you are
There's oceans in between us, but that's not very far
Blurry - Puddle of Mudd

12. Two trailer park girls go 'round the outside
'Round the outside, 'round the outside
Without Me - Eminem (I hate Marshall, but this song still cracks my shit up every time I hear it...)

Image Bonus: If you remember the 00's, you probably didn't live through them...

BiT gets the IBB for rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Seriously, who stacked all those chairs up so nice and neat while the ship was still sinking!?!?!? That just looks bizarre....

JJC Points:

Panic gets a JJC point for hating the decade (and apparently an 11 year decade according to that image)...

mikeh gets 3 JJC points for what could have very well been the regular news during the late 90's (I still remember the special sweeps month report our local news station did asking a computer "expert" whether our plain old microwaves would still function in 2000. And the "expert" hemmed and hawed about maybe, probably on cue)...

Weasel gets 3 JJC points for wanting to go back to the 2000's, and for tearing it up just as he was almost in the lead...

frank gets a JJC point for youknowwhat....

jarnon gets a JJC point for copying off mikeh's hysteria...

Krox gets ANOTHER supermax for fifty ways to spell Britney...

mrk gets a JJC point for bad hair and makeup...

Beebs gets a supermax for boobs...

Earl gets 3 JJC points for the weird way we remember music (When I think of 9/11, I think of Afroman's "Because I Got High," and vice versa), the Wizlets and that cat...

Vandal gets a JJC point for some random team from the 2000's...

BiT gets 2 JJC points for just another reason to never go on a cruise...

Bob gets a JJC point for being a Chad...
