Lyrically Speaking - 2/21/24

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Wed Feb 21, 2024 7:32 am

Rockin' in the USA has covered 47 of the 48 contiguous US states thus far (Sorry Alaska and Hawaii), and the fifth and final version covers the last remaining state exclusively....

Yep, we're going back to Cali. All of the songs below are from bands or artists who hail from California, or for the sake of consistency, the area above I included in my California territory. And if you've got a problem with that, well that's just totally gnarly, dude....

1 point for the title 1 point for the artist, the Earl Rule shouldn't even need to be mentioned.....

1. Well since she put me down I've been out doin' in my head
I come in late at night and in the mornin' I just lay in bed

2. Living without you
Living alone
This empty house seems so cold
Wanting to hold you
Wanting you near
How much I want to bring you home

3. It's not what I'm used to
Just wanna try you on
I'm curious for you
Caught my attention

4. Ain't nothin' like it, her shiny machine
Got the feel for the wheel
Keep the moving parts clean

5. Music hits me so hard
Makes me say "Oh, my Lord
Thank you for blessing me
With a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet"

6. I was born in the wagon of a travelin' show
My mama used to dance for the money they'd throw

7. I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what's best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes

8. I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the borderline
Of the edge, and where I walk alone

9. Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don't care
'Cause it's alright

10. Tambourines and elephants are playin' in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon?

11. I might have to move Heaven and Earth to prove it to you, baby (baby)
So we're making love, you feel the power and I feel the power
And there's really nothing we can't do
(You know we could, you know we could)
If we wanted to
(You know we could, you know we could)

12. But I don't want your drama
If you really wanna
Leave out that Oxford comma

1. Well since she put me down I've been out doin' in my head
I come in late at night and in the mornin' I just lay in bed
Help Me Rhonda - Beach Boys (This song was Chris Berman's nickname for former MLB'er Joe Randa. Around the same time, I had a calculus professor whose last name was Hebda, and to this day, I still sing the chorus of this song as "Hebda Randa...")

2. Living without you
Living alone
This empty house seems so cold
Wanting to hold you
Wanting you near
How much I want to bring you home
Open Arms - Journey

3. It's not what I'm used to
Just wanna try you on
I'm curious for you
Caught my attention
I Kissed A Girl - Katy Perry

4. Ain't nothin' like it, her shiny machine
Got the feel for the wheel
Keep the moving parts clean
Panama - Van Halen (I still remember shocking Kiki by using the spoken word part of this song in a very old LSWE game...)

5. Music hits me so hard
Makes me say "Oh, my Lord
Thank you for blessing me
With a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet"
U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer (aka Stanley Burrell, former batboy for the Las Vegas Oakland A's...)

6. I was born in the wagon of a travelin' show
My mama used to dance for the money they'd throw
Gypsies Tramps and Thieves - Cher (Gypsy, the name I gave to the beautiful white cat who used to come to my door every morning from March 2018 to March 2019, was named after this song when I titled a blog post with it...)

Image

7. I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what's best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes
Shirt Skirt, Long Jacket - Cake

8. I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the borderline
Of the edge, and where I walk alone
Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day

9. Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don't care
'Cause it's alright
Touch of Grey - Grateful Dead

10. Tambourines and elephants are playin' in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon?
Lookin' Out My Back Door - Creedence Clearwater Revival (I only failed to fact-check regions for artists where I was absolutely confident I knew what area of the country they came from. That cock-suredness nearly blew up in my face when I had to hastily yank CCR out of my South game when I began looking for artists from California.... and lo and behold, there was CCR. I'd have sworn John Fogarty actually was born on a bayou....)

11. I might have to move Heaven and Earth to prove it to you, baby (baby)
So we're making love, you feel the power and I feel the power
And there's really nothing we can't do
(You know we could, you know we could)
If we wanted to
(You know we could, you know we could)
Miracles - Jefferson Starplane

12. But I don't want your drama
If you really wanna
Leave out that Oxford comma
Word Crimes - Weird Al Yankovic (The most talented artist to ever emerge from the ghettos of Lynwood....)

Image Bonus: Show me something from Cali-forn-I-A...

I've long been a sports fan, and in the 90's was completely obsessed with all of the major sports. I really thought I knew it all... but apparently not. I had no idea the California Seals even existed, and was blown away to find out they were a legit NHL team that eventually moved to Cleveland and then was absorbed into the Minnesota North Stars. So Krox gets the IBB for throwing out a sports fact I can't believe I'd never come across before...

JJC Points:

Panic gets a JJC point for knowing celebrities...

Krox gets a supermax for the sports lesson...

frank gets 2 JJC points for constipated wrinkly turds...

jarnon gets 2 JJC points for concert security, and for the later link, which I found most amusing for the fact that ABC News apparently still uses go.com as its main website!

BiT gets 2 JJC points for Al Capone's Island...

mikeh gets a JJC point for an illegal alien in California...

Bob gets 2 JJC points for shameless self promotion...

Earl gets 2 JJC points for Eddie G, grumpy Cat, and hating Oxford commas...
